74 minute feature film DVD. This wacky 1970s time capsule is notable for its format, themes, and no-holds-barred parodies of network television--news reports, commercials, and sitcoms. THE GROOVE TUBE probably takes a cue from British comedy troupes like Monty Python. A raunchy precursor to films like KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE and AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON, as well as television sketch comedy from SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE to THE KIDS IN THE HALL, THE GROOVE TUBE is also notable for early appearances from Chevy Chase and Richard Belzer.
The Groove Tube's real attractions are its acute observations of the details of television, and its capturing of the zeitgeist to perfection.
Theatrical Release: June 1974.
Film debut for Chevy Chase.

Groove Tube Movie Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) AT THE TIME IS WAS FUNNY A 1974 grab bag comedy, the skits are all parodies of television programs and commercials, but none is the slightest bit funny and the film depended entirely upon its short-lived breakthroughs in sexual frankness to generate shock laughs. Now that talking penises, declarations of homosexuality and women willing to disrobe before the camera are standard occurrences (well, okay, you don’t see too many talking penises, but they do show up here and there), nothing in the film is the slightest bit titillating. The jokes seem flat and desperate.
The film is presented in full screen format only and the sides seem a bit tight, but, like the scratchy source material and bland colors, the show’s format accommodates any presentation flaw. It is impossible to tell where the put-on ends and the genuine degradation of image begins, but to some extent it doesn’t matter. The monophonic is strained but coherent. The 73 minute program is not captioned and is accompanied by a trailer. Richard Belzer and Chevy Chase were among those featured in the cast.

$10.29 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films ...

$10.29 LOVE OBJECT is the deeply disturbing story of a man and his anatomically correct sex doll. Kenneth (Desmond Harrington) is the star tech writer at a soulless Los Angeles firm. He is robotic and repressed until a co-worker shows him a picture of Nikki, a $10,000 sex doll. It's love at first sight for poor Kenneth, and soon he is sharing sex, conversation, and even waltzes with this inanimate object of his dreams. At the same time a new face enters his life in the form of a cute coworker named Lisa (Melissa Sagemiller). The two female figures become entwined in Kenneth's mind and he begins to dress Nikki like Lisa and vice versa. As his real-life romance blossoms, the spirit of Nikki starts to come alive, stalking him in nightmares and dominating him via S&M. Kenneth tries to get rid of her, but learns it's not so easy. That's only the start of the lurid insanity at play in this well-crafted little indie. By the blood-spattered climax it gets almost unbearably intense and unnerving, but before that there's some genuinely nice chemistry ...

Groove Tube film
$14.55 In 1975, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore quit the seminal hard-rock band Deep Purple to form his own contribution to the annals of rock history, Rainbow. Fronted by mystically-minded lead singer Ronnie James Dio, Rainbow produced a string of classic albums that made them one of the most influential heavy metal bands of the 1970s. But Blackmore's desire to craft a more commercial sound clashed with Dio's purist tendencies, resulting in the singer's departure in 1979. Blackmore then continued the band with a continually evolving sound and a rotating ...
| | Great New Wonderful DVD (2006)
Groove Tube review
$19.35 Viewers may be shocked to learn that a film set one year after September 11th was directed by Danny Leiner, the man responsible for such stoner comedies as HAROLD AND KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE and DUDE, WHERE'S MY CAR?. While those films were hardly subtle, A GREAT NEW WONDERFUL tries very hard to be, never directly referring to 9/11 but rather to the general unease that was left in its wake. In what has become a familiar formula, the film relies on interweaving separate narratives to tell five stories simultaneously. As the lives of several New Yorkers from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds unwind in September 2002, we are invited to look for clues of post-traumatic stress. What unfolds, however, could very well have occurred in September 2000, as the film never clearly states how direct a connection the characters have to the World Trade Center attacks.
As a ruthlessly ambitious young cake-maker (Maggie Gyllenhaal) aims to outdo her competition (Edie Falco), two immigrant security guards drive around the city and offer commentary on life. Meanwhile, a yuppie mother (Judy Greer) struggles to control her violent ...
