O SOL DE OSLO was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album.
This 1998 Gilberto Gil recording is rather different from QUANTA and his other '90s releases. With SOL DE OSLO, Gil attempts to represent some of the culturally diverse variations of the music of Brazil's Northeast, known as the sertao (backlands.) He brings with him the lovely accordion playing of Toninho Ferragutti, as well as a tabla player and various other instruments representing a cross-cultural, trans-global sound.
As if this were not enough, Gil and his musicians also collect traditional songs from all over Brazil to be performed alongside originals written by Gil and the producer of SOL DE OSLO, Rodolfo Stroeter. Gil's voice is as beautiful and strong as always. The odd assortment of instruments is used quite tastefully, and guest vocalist Marlui Mirandi--who has worked with indigenous tribes of the Amazon--shines in a manner not heard on her own records. SOL DE OSLO shows that even after 30 years, Gilberto Gil was still one of the most inventive figures in Brazilian music.
Brazil legend Gilberto Gil is joined on this record by some famous world musicians including Marlui Miranda, Bugge Wesseltoft, Trilok Gurtu and Toninho Ferragutti. Full of beautiful melodies and acoustic grooves this is another solid entry in the history

Produced with great slickness by the ex-Mutante known as Liminha, QUANTA features Gil in top vocal form. As usual with a Gilberto Gil recording, a wide variety of musical styles is represented here. The English translations of the lyrics also point to a wide range of subjects, from the Internet to garlic pills to the nature of creativity.
Some of the songs such as "Pela Internet" and "Guerra Santa" are impressive juxtapositions that intertwine contemporary Brazilian pop with elements of blues, rap and just about anything else you can think of; yet the music on QUANTA is never so eccentric as to be overly challenging to the listener. By placing the location and dates, "New York City, September 19-20, 2001," on the stark cover of this concert album, Laurie Anderson evokes the context in which the shows from which it was drawn occurred: They took place less than two weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks in the city that was one of the principal targets. Anderson is not the sort of artist one would think of immediately as an ideal commentator on those cataclysmic events; hers is a cool, ironic persona, and irony was one of the immediate casualties of the attacks. Her introductory comments do not bode well, as she speaks, in her perpetually becalmed voice, of the "great opportunity" the attacks provide to "live in a completely new world," surely not a sentiment her listeners can have shared, as the sparse applause indicates. ...
