After helping lay the groundwork for concept albums and progressive rock with 1967's orchestra-enhanced suite DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, the Moodies retrenched for the follow-up. They abandoned the orchestra but kept their sound as rich as before by playing a multitude of instruments themselves, including everything from sitar to cello to oboe. At the time, it was remarkable enough for these instruments to appear on a rock record, much less to be played by the band itself. The string-laden conceptual pieces of DAYS were replaced by shorter, more concise songs that leaned more toward Beatlesque pop and displayed a pronounced Eastern influence.

A lesser-known name on the '60s rock scene, the Association has nevertheless enjoyed some posthumous cult status, and collects some of its best songs on this sprawling, 52-track collection of material.
With their flower-power-tinged pop masterpieces and heavenly vocal harmonies the Association was at the epicenter of the '60s California "sunshine pop" scene whose other luminaries included the Mamas & the Papas and the Beach Boys. Though the group's many hits make up a major part of the '60s musical legacy, the Association's only representation on CD in the US before the release of the two-disc, 51-song JUST THE RIGHT SOUND was a single, short hits compilation. In retrospect, it's difficult to comprehend the fact that most of these tracks were never made available to the public at large until 2002, but now pop aficionados may rejoice and marvel at the sparkling perfection of Bones Howe and Curt Boettcher's productions, the sonic equivalent of sunshine on a summer day.
The group's folk-rock beginnings can be heard on such tracks as "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" and Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings." The title says it all: Although not steeped in heavy metal riffs or gothic sound effects, this 1976 effort from Grand Funk Railroad creates a mood gloomy enough to rival the darkest moments of Black Sabbath. By this point in their career, the band was feeling run into the ground and this is reflected in the mood of the lyrics: the title track is mournful rumination on the inevitability of death and "I Feel for Your Love" explores the depression created by the end of a relationship. The result is an album that feels like an anomaly in the Grand Funk Railroad catalog: the album's dark mood sits at odds with the group's normally energetic style and, thus, robs it of a lot of its punch.
