POWERMAN 5000 is an agreeably cartoonish metal/rap hybrid, distinguished by sci-fi and superhero imagery and lead singer Spider One's hilariously over-the-top declamations. Any similarity to White Zombie is totally intentional; in fact, Rob Zombie himself shows up on the aptly named "Blast Off to Nowhere." Other highlights include "When Worlds Collide" and "Nobody's Real," which have rather canny big chorus sing-along hooks, and don't miss a cover of The Cars' "Good Times Roll" that totally out-sinisters the original. Bottom line: exactly the kind of album Beavis and Butt-Head would have killed for.

CMJ (7/19/99, p.3) - "...tighter than a barbed wire noose wrapped around your neck....[TONIGHT] relies on sci-fi imagery and memorable hooks that are sharp enough to catch more than a few big, heavy fish."
