The Lost Boyz' second album, Love, Peace & Nappiness, finds the group adding touches of reggae and ragga to its hard-edged hip-hop. The deeper production -- thick bass, echoing beats, and keyboards -- makes Love, Peace & Nappiness more sonically intriguing than the average rap album, but the Lost Boyz occasionally struggle for material, leaving the record a fitfully enjoyable listen. ~ Leo Stanley At a time when the majority of hip-hop anthems focus on packin' gats and loadin' clips, the Lost Boyz have earned respect by putting the "party" back into rap music. On their follow-up to LEGAL DRUG MONEY, the Jamaica, Queens natives remain one of the few rap groups who seem to remember where hip-hop originated. LOVE, PEACE & NAPPINESS displays their ability to deliver radio-friendly mainstream rap without selling out their core audience. Interesting stories, catchy choruses, and bangin' tracks make this an album that can be enjoyed from beginning to end. Lead rapper Mr. Cheeks proves to be a master of storytelling, especially on "Me & My Crazy World," where he describes the feeling of being in love with two women. "Beasts From The East," which features Redman, teen rapper A+ and newcomer Canibus, has a hard-core feel and adds grit to the album, while the title track takes it back to the old school with a sample of the classic Slick Rick song, "Hey Young World."The Source (7/97, p.108) - 3.5 Mics (out of 5) - "...Supplying us with addictive, sing-along choruses and bouncy, foot-stomping basslines, the dreadlocked, derby-hat wearing, gruff-voiced quartet from Q-borough have created some of hip-hop's most infectious party joints..." Rap Pages (9/97, p.96) - "...The Lost Boyz shine as anti-pop stars once again on their sparkling sophomore album....The narrative storytelling of Mr. Cheeks commands attention..." Love, Peace & Nappiness
$13.35 Madacy's Tina Turner disc The Essential Collection is a strange package. From the title and the cover photo, it looks like a collection of latter-day solo Tina tracks. Flip it to the back cover and the wording changes to Ike & Tina Turner at their best. Inside are three discs. The first is a straight copy of EMI's 1992 collection called Proud Mary and Other Hits, a nine-song roundup of some of their best and funkiest songs like "Proud Mary" and "Sexy Ida" that were recorded in the early '70s for Liberty. The second two discs were first released as Love Sessions by Madacy in 2003 and are random collections ...
