"Tyrone" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. Conventional wisdom dictates that an artist should not release a live album as her second record, especially if it follows the debut by a matter of months. However, Erykah Badu is not a conventional artist and Live is not a conventional live album. While her debut, Baduizm, earned strong reviews and healthy sales, her concerts became equally popular and she became known as a powerhouse live performer. Live solidifies that reputation, delivering soulful, gritty versions of cuts from Baduizm, a few covers, and the spectacular new single, "Tyrone." Not only does it illustrate the depths of Badu's talents, but Live is as strong and captivating as Baduizm. ~ Leo Stanley With her debut album, Erykah Badu exploded onto the R&B scene, quickly achieving iconic status lofty enough to displace Mary J. Blige as the reigning queen of modern soul. On this live recording, she makes it clear that her talent is not bound to studio chicanery and expensive production. Throughout LIVE, Badu exhibits the intensely soulful yet artfully restrained vocal style that has made her such a runaway success. On her own tunes such as "On & On" and "Apple Tree" as well as distinctive interpretations of Chaka Khan's "Stay" and Heatwave's "Boogie Nights" she evinces an authority that is as enthralling as it is unquestionable.Entertainment Weekly (11/28/97, p.83) - "...not only validates the comparisons to jazz singers but shows off how original and idiosyncratic her phrasing can be..." - Rating: B+ Rap Pages (3/98, p.112) - "...Erykah Badu LIVE stands as a self-reflective mirror for both her growth as an artist and our reality as human beings. It is for all those who seek to live, love, laugh and elevate..." Icon In a world of smoke and mirrors, Ms. Badu reminds me of the divinity of life. "Live" is the best reflection of this magic. She's a true American poet; one of the masters: Whitman, Angelou, Dylan... another hero. Submitted by Candice (Portland, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Live! This is one of the best live CDs I've ever heard. Every song is so well done to the point of picking which "tracks" are best is pointless. This is one that you simply push "play" and be done with it. This woman has that timing thing pat, I don't know how to describe it, but she has it. Her words and the beat of the music just come together so perfectly. Submitted by marcusj_j (Aurora IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Becky Thomas I Delight In You CD (2009)
Live
$11.49 Becky Thomas, a singer, songwriter and musician, was recently nominated by the Canadian Gospel Music Association for 4 Covenant Awards in the following categories for 2008:Best Aboriginal Song - The Spirit WayBest Aboriginal Song - Heal The LandBest Country/Bluegrass Song - No High Like The Most HighBest Aboriginal Album - “I Delight In You”Born in Bristol, Tennessee, but having lived and traveled in many different places thru Youth With A Mission and other ministries, Thomas borrows from the many different genres that have made up her life and musical experience on her first solo debut, "I Delight in You". Some of the more unique sounds interwoven thru this album include Native American chants and drums, paraphrased Scripture and Hebrew names for God."When researching the sounds that make up the chants, I was surprised to find many of the words translate to names for God in Hebrew. This has added a new meaning and depth to my worship, knowing that such simple chants as “Hey-ah” can be used as a guttural prayer to Yahweh. It is so awesome to see that God has hidden His Name in some of the deepest heart cries of aboriginal people the world over – He really is an awesome God and Creator!”Here are some of the stories behind the songs on this album:I Delight in You – this song actually came to me during a very hard season of ministry. Our girls were still very young, we were pastoring our first church, and we were at our wits end with the challenges of life. One night I dreamt that Father God came and began singing over us and other individuals in our church family. I woke up singing “I delight in you” and later shared it in a spontaneous time of worship at church that morning. The song changed me, how I dealt with the hard things life was throwing at us, and how I saw God in it all.The Spirit Way – soon after we moved to Williams Lake, BC, living in such close proximity to 13 different Indian bands, the Lord began to remind me of the stories of native ancestry in my family. It was an identity that I had always held dear to my heart, but never had a place to express. The Lord began to speak to me, asking me to pull that hidden part of me out and to the forefront. I then had a vision of a friendship dance (didn’t even know what one was at the time, I was so green!) and saw different nations of people dancing around one fire. This song came out of that experience, and was also greatly influenced by Richard Twiss’ wonderful book, “One Church, Many Tribes”.You Are – this song woke me up one morning at 4 am, waiting to be written! We threw in a little native chanting and some Hebrew names for God in celebration of the One who made us all.I Will Remember – straight out of the Bible, this song came yet another early Sunday morning, a kind of prophetic leading into a tremendous time of soaking in the love of God, our Father and Creator. Heal The Land – I started this as a worship song, wanting to include both Hebrew, western and aboriginal names for God. During the recording of it, I felt led to read out of Romans 8 and the song took off into an intercessory track I had never dreamed of. The realization that all of creation, the land itself, is groaning, waiting for us, the children of God, to take our rightful place in the Kingdom of God, shook me to the core and has forever done a paradigm shift in my thinking.Beatitudes – many sermons have been written on this passage out of Matthew 5, and this song came for me out of a time of fasting and prayer. My favorite two lines are “blessed are the poor, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven” and “blessed are those who are meek, they will inherit the whole earth”. There is a truth that in our poverty and humility we are able to see the Creator break in to our circumstances and create something of beauty that we could never achieve ...
