Every song on Turkish pretty boy Tarkan's self titled album is a knockout, guaranteed to make your feet tap, your hips shake, or your body sway. Simarik, or "spoiled" in English, was a chart topper even in the clubs of Europe, Olollum Sana is a beautiful blend of east and west, while Sikidim and Bu Gece will make you dance. Inci Tanem makes me cry, and Basina Bela Olulum makes me smile. "Tarkan" has grown on me more and more, and is definately one of my most versatile CDs. Buy it, you'll love it.

An 11-song snapshot of the Dazz Band's Motown stint that includes the not-often-featured "To the Roof," whose origins date back to "Take It to the Woof" by Cleveland, OH-based funk band Morning Maniac led by ex-Dazz Band member Kenny Pettus who's the lead voice on the Earth, Wind and Fire-ish "I Might As Well Forget About Loving You." But other than that, there are no surprises, just straight-ahead digitally remastered Dazz Band blasts that blow you away in CD format ("Let It Whip"'s bassline is hypnotizing). For lovers, "Invitation to Love" and "Knock, Knock" are bonafide heart stirrers and the only two slow jams in the bunch. Come Closer is Tarkan's first English-language album after several years as a Madonna-level superstar in his native Turkey. With his well-scrubbed, boyish looks, blue-eyed-soul voice and fondness for ear-grabbing, gimmicky arrangements a la the Neptunes, Tarkan comes across like a Turkish Justin Timberlake. On the best parts of Come Closer, particularly the first single "Bounce" and the insistently catchy "Why Don't We (Aman Aman)" (which comes complete with a cameo by Wyclef Jean), Tarkan strikes a delicate balance between creamy dance-pop goodness and cheesy, over-produced plasticity. A few songs fall too far on the wrong side of that balance, such as the irritating "Start the Fire" and the hyperactive, Black Eyed Peas-like "Don't Leave Me Alone," but on songs like the snaky electro-belly dance "Shikidim" and the dreamy love jam of a title track, Tarkan makes all the right moves. Much as happened when Shakira did the English-language crossover with Laundry Service, longtime fans and pan-cultural hipsters might blanch at how thoroughly Americanized this take on commercial dance-pop is, but fans of the form will find much to love regardless. ~ Stewart Mason

It's like country and rock spent the night together and neither had the nerve to call each other in the morning. That's just one way to describe this high energy duo. Doug Healy & Randy Orr have just released their 3rd CD "Old Dirt Roads". With the exception of an Ozzy cover tune, and "Light In The Wood" by friend Peter Liardi, these are all Healy & Orr co-writes. Between the two of them, they perform everything you will hear on the CD. Healy on acoustics, mandolin, banjo and electrics, Orr handling bass, drums, acoustics, harmonica and keys. Lead vocals are mostly by Healy but with the amount of harmony vocals by Orr, it almost seems like a co lead situation.
