Richard Blair's debut full-length attempt to merge Latin music with the futuristic sounds of post-20th century electronic dance music comes across as a noble and welcomed effort. Seemingly trapped within its syncopated thumps and bumps, U.K. dance music has long needed an infusion of such rhythmically complex percussion while still retaining the tech-savvy gloss so favored in the dance scene. So in terms of merging the two, Blair succeeds, and does it remarkably well. On the dancefloor, these tracks should inspire plenty of enthusiasm. Unfortunately, Blair's sounds don't come across nearly as well in a home-listening situation, where a feeling of continuity and underlying concept make full-length album listening a more pleasant experience. This album doesn't have much of either, instead sounding like a collection of dance tracks compiled onto an album. Sure, most full-length dance albums share this characteristic, but in this case, it's just too blatant, given the fact that Blair is still working out the kinks in his sound, trying to find a truly signatures sound rather than just an effective template. ~ Jason Birchmeier

More Grip
$13.05 This is a "Super Tagged" CD, which includes MP3 versions of all tracks which can be downloaded into MP3 players.
After escaping from the globalizing realm of Peter Gabriel's Real World studio via a three-year exploration of Colombia and subsequent fusion of the country's exotic salsa music with U.K. drum'n'bass on his debut album, More Grip, Richard Blair steps away from the dancefloor and returns to what at first appears to be traditional Colombian music. But Blair still carries with him quite a few lessons learned in the dance community. 3am: In Beats We Trust might star an eight-person Colombian band, but it is Blair's post-production mastery that adds a modern flavor to the traditional salsa music composed ...

$15.24 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque Beatlesque pop of the '60s ...

$9.58 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly ...

$7.59 "Butterfly" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Honey" was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.
A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with the spirit of independence and freedom.
BUTTERFLY is full of such hopeful, uplifting moments, but it is equally infused with a deep sense of sadness and loss, as displalyed on the album's numerous ballads, most notably "Breakdown," a simple, honest song with a "Tears Of A Clown" motif, on which Carey sings of hiding her sadness from the world. Both joy and grief are explored on this album with equal tenacity.
Engineers include: Dana Jon Chappelle, Rich Travali, Glen Marchese, Mike Scott, David Gleeson.
Principally recorded at: The Hit Factory, New York, New York.
Personnel: Mariah Carey (vocals, background vocals); Krayzie Bone, Wish Bone (vocals, background vocals); Dru Hill, Mase, The LOX (vocals); Michael Ciro (guitar); Donald ...
