Carla's First Christmas music CDs
$8.25 "Idiosyncratic alternative pop" immediately comes to mind when trying to describe Cake to the uninitiated. On the band's fifth album, PRESSURE CHIEF, John McCrea and company continue down the same creative path with their tried-and-true knapsack of sonic elements--McCrea's deadpan phrasing, sprinklings of trumpet, and off-kilter hooks that manage to work in spite of themselves.
Fueled by its frontman's progressive views on everyday life, this Sacramento ...
| | Adrian Belew Side One CD (2005)
Carla's First Christmas songs
$11.49 By 2005, it had been nearly eight years since Adrian Belew had unleashed an all-new solo studio effort. That's not to say he wasn't busy, though, as he toured/recorded with both King Crimson and the Bears during this time. And in the process, he became quite friendly with two of rock's top players -- Primus' Les Claypool and Tool's Danny Carey -- who happened to be major Belew fans. As a result, Belew invited the duo to play on several tracks on Side One. But be forewarned: they do not appear on the entire album, which is a shame, because the two best tracks -- "Ampersand" and "Writing on the Wall" (the latter of which is a fierce funk-rocker, quite reminiscent of early-'80s-era King Crimson) -- are the ones that contain this stellar lineup. But that's not to say the other tracks aren't worthwhile; other standouts include the noisy, repetitive epic "Madness" ...
| | Anita Kerr Bert Kaempfert Turns Us On! CD (2007)
Carla's First Christmas album
$10.29 Bordering on easy listening, the Anita Kerr Singers provided an airy, non-threatening pop sensibility scored by the "first lady" of the Nashville music studio scene. Kerr's sizable credentials landed her a multi-project deal at Warner Bros., where she cut five albums in less than two years. This is the third in the series, which included tunes penned or made famous by the German composer Bert Kaempfert. Although he would rack up several notable numbers stateside, perhaps residual reticence from WWII was reflected by Kaempfert's lack of success. However, Kerr's infallible ear helped her recast his biggest hits for 1967's dozen-song Bert Kaempfert Turns Us On! "L-O-V-E" was a latter-era chart-maker for Nat King Cole, and is perhaps most familiar to modern audiences from multiple uses in a variety of advertisements. Here, the laid-back vocalists give the tune a warmth that would become a trademark of Kerr's ensemble. The gentle "Two Can Live on Love Alone" takes on a definite melancholia, thanks in part to the artist's lead wafting above the male chorus to great effect. Slightly more upbeat is the jazzy soft shoe of "Remember ...
| | Tim Gearan No Remedy CD (2007)
Carla's First Christmas CD music
$18.99 Tim spent his childhood years in New York, traveling back an forth from NYC to the suburbs. In Tim's home growing up, there was always a guitar handy to hack around with, and so he was inspired to pick it up at a young age. Tim learned to sing and play like his heroes; The Beatles and The Stones, of course, and subsequently many of their influences (Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddly, Bob Dylan) to name just a few. While learning the ins and outs of traditional blues, he always had one iron in the songwriting fire.By the time Tim was in his twenty's he was playing for audiences and creating a style of his own. Since then he has made a living playing music in New Orleans, Los Angeles, Martha's Vineyard and has been in Boston since the 1980's. Around 1992, Tim began playing guitar with and writing songs for W.C. Handy nominee Toni Lynn Washington. During that time, Tim toured clubs and festivals in Europe and the U.S. The release of his debut cd, 'Back Home' has allowed Tim to reveal his enormous creative range and delightfully understated song writing, exposing the emergence of a talent to watch. Along with playing his music for crowded rooms around Boston at venues such as Club Passim, Johnny D's, the Regent Theater and others, Tim has enjoyed about a 10 year residency on Monday nights at legendary music ...
