San Diego's Pinback is an unassuming trio that creeps up on you in powerful ways. Like a scent that has the power to transport one to another time and place, Pinback's music is rich in powerful and transcendent glimpsed memories. The images on the cover and inside of the CD booklet are a series of vacation snap shots. These images of distant trips that somebody else took capture the nostalgia that comes from thinking about the rapid passage of time. Pinback was formed by songwriters Rob Crow and Armistead B. Smith IV, who write songs that comfort through an ethereal richness. Simple melodic figures repeat and become layered, leading a listener along pathways strewn with the melancholy of lost love and fragmented dreams. Lush vocals drift in and out of the instrumental backing like fish through an underwater garden.

Pinback album
$11.45 On the band's second album, Blue Screen Life, Pinback redefines its classic emo sound into something lush and personal. Quirky pop harmonies swirl into indie rock bliss and sweeping acoustics explore the bandmembers' grand air as they make a sound for themselves. Songs such as "Boo" and "XIY" showcase Pinback's growing musicianship and an intelligence similar to the likes of Built to Spill and Elliott Smith. "Prog" and "West" are both sweetly tainted with delicate percussion arrangements and hushing vocals -- however, it's not incredibly outstanding. Blue Screen Life is a progression for Pinback, and internal complexities inside the band's songs are quite obvious. It's not unique or brilliant; it's a healthy dose of Pinback's satisfaction in keeping things simple -- lyrically and musically. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

| | Pinback Some Voices CD (2000)
Pinback CD music
$8.75 A charming set of songs with sparse instrumentation and pleading vocals, Some Voices is a lo-fi snack that never stays in the same mode long enough to get boring. The members of Pinback fill the space appropriately, but still manage to never push into the red. A thoroughly enjoyable sample of what this group has to offer. ~ Zac Johnson

| | Pinback Offcell CD (2003)
Pinback music CDs
$8.09 Rob Crow and Armistead B. Smith IV continue to create complex indie pop with smart, subtle structures on Pinback's Offcell. Vocal tracks harmonize, electronics punctuate, guitars punch clean, key changes shift quickly, and syncopated drums all swirl in the thick instrumentation, giving Offcell many dimensions. The members of Pinback write their own material that covers different areas, including the straight-ahead pop of "Microtonic Wave," angular prog rock of "B," and guitar-driven loopy Folk Implosion sound of the title track. "Victorious D" shows off the angular post-rock smarts of Pinback. Driving bass pumps along, while keys change and the keyboards accent sentimental vocals. "Grey Machine" is a catchy, repetitive gem that rounds out Offcell. This track has a different feel from the rest of the record, offering big drums against layers of vocals, keyboards, guitars, and programming, sounding like a mellow Built to Spill. Each of the tracks has interesting electric outro melodies that are thrown in for fun; some lead into the next track, while others leave you wondering where that melody could have landed. Possibly the future of Pinback? Perhaps. But Pinback doesn't stray too far from its previous work; all of the tunes are enjoyable and never get boring. If you are familiar with Pinback, Offcell is good, but doesn't break new ground. ~ David Serra
It's finally here, the first Pinback release of all new material since 2001's Blue Screen Life. Off Cell contains five brand new 2003 non-LP tracks including the live crowd pleaser 'Victorious D'. Tracks - 'Microtonic Wave', 'Victorious D', 'Off Cell', 'B' & 'Greay-Machine'. Absolutely Kosher Records.

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Pinback songs
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic, decade-spanning rock anthology.

| | Pinback Summer In Abaddon CD (2004)
Pinback album
$12.09 A little research on the title of Pinback's 2004 album SUMMER IN ABADDON reveals the literal meaning of Abaddon as "complete destruction or ruin," as well as being the Hebrew name for the demon guarding the pits of Hell. It could, of course, also be referring to the small township in Pennsylvania.
The album itself is also full of contrasts, meshing crisp, mid-tempo math-rock rhythms and pristine guitar work with rather cryptic and unsettling lyrics, one part journal entry and one part jagged-romance manifesto. Copious syncopation and vocal harmonies hint at mid-era Sunny Day Real Estate, though Pinback's bass-heavy melodies owe more of a debt to slowcore heroes Bedhead. The group approaches the emotional peaks of early Modest Mouse with the stiff-and-staggered delivery of "Non Photo-Blue" and "Syracuse," but the drums-and-piano arrangement of "The Yellow Ones" hints at a darker direction towards the end of the album. Perhaps not quite dark enough to verge on the aforementioned pits of Hell, but certainly enough to seem pitch black against the idyllic atmosphere of the rest of the record.

| | Pinback Nautical Antiques CD (2006)
Pinback CD music
$12.65 NAUTICAL ANTIQUES, Pinback's first release following its lauded 2004 album, SUMMER IN ABADDON, collects B-sides and rarities from the San Diego-based indie-rock band's earlier tenure with the Ace Fu label. Led by vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow, the group reveals that its stray songs are often on par with its album tracks, particularly the opening version of the mesmerizing, vaguely reggae-like "Messenger" and the gentle, lilting "Byzantine." In addition, fans of BLUE SCREEN LIFE will enjoy a pair of demo tracks from that outing, most notably a beat-driven, lo-fi version of "Concrete Seconds" that arguably tops its more familiar counterpart. While those new to Pinback's inviting, laid-back sound would do best to start with one of the aforementioned records, this compilation is essential for the devoted followers of the ensemble.

| | George Harrison Dark Horse CD (1974)
Pinback songs
$14.69 George Harrison's only North American tour was in support of this album, which included the singles "Dark Horse" and "Ding Dong; Ding Dong." Critics, who may have been scared off by an opening track called "Hari's On Tour (Express)," were not amused. No doubt they were hoping to hear George, not Hari, on tour. But the album has its pleasures, such as the prodigious pop hook of "Ding Dong; Ding Dong," which isn't nearly as silly a song as its title would have you believe, and nifty little album tracks like "Far East Man." Soap-opera fans are directed to "Bye Bye Love," which is about his wife, Patti, and his best friend, Eric Clapton. Clapton, for those keeping score, had previously expressed his love for Patti on "Layla." Later, he would marry her.
All songs written by George Harrison except "Bye Bye Love" (Felice & Boudleaux Bryant) and "Far East Man" (Harrison/Ron Wood).
Personnel: George Harrison (vocals, guitars), Eric Clapton, Robben Ford, Mick Jones, Alvin Lee, Ron Wood (guitars), Tom Scott (horns, flute), Jim Horn, Chuck Findley (flute), Roger Kellaway, Nicky Hopkins, Gary Wright (piano), Billy Preston (electric piano), Gub Gubi (Moog), Max Bennett, Willie Weeks, Klaus Voorman (bass), John Guerin, Ringo Starr, Jim Keltner, Andy Newmark (drums), Lon and Derek Van Eaton (background vocals).

$5.35 A donation will be made to The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund from the sale of each CD.
In the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a passel of patriotic-themed compilation albums was released to bolster national morale. PROUD TO BE AMERICAN is one of the most successful of those releases, and it contains a number of chestnuts most closely associated with patriotism and the experience of being an American. Under less dire circumstances, this is the kind of album that might be roundly ignored, but in tough times, these are the kind of songs that people cling to and rally around.

$17.69 | | She Wants Revenge CD (2006) Edited
Pinback music CDs
$8.65 With clanking, Peter Hook-esque basslines, none-too-subtle song titles like "Out of Control" and "Tear You Apart," and Justin Warfield's Ian Curtis/Dave Gahan-inspired vocals, it's clear that She Wants Revenge is a loyal student of 1980s British post-punk and new wave. The duo plays its catchy, slightly dissolute songs to the accompaniment of impeccable-sounding period synthesizers and drum machines, a la Human League, and the influence of the pair's previous careers as L.A. DJs comes through in their flawless '80s club-land accents. An almost flawless recreation of its forebears, She Wants Revenge are more than competent enough to give a frisson to anyone for whom "Love Will Tear Us Apart" and "She's Lost Control" are still undiscovered pleasures.
She Wants Revenge: Justin Warfield (vocals, guitar, computer); Adam 12 (keyboards, bass guitar, percussion, programming); Adam Brown.
| | Montefiori Cocktail Montefiori Appetizer CD (2006) Import
Pinback songs
$22.09 Their music is inspired by the sound that used to be called Easy Listening and that has become in its modern form, Lounge Music. Montefiori are Italy's major representative of the easy listening evolution, offering the 60's sounds enriched with technological elements. Their style is inspired by the 60's and the beginning of the 70's. They grasp the vitality spirit conveyed by that period music, by re-proposing it in musical forms that belong to our time, through the contamination with house, breakbeat, jungle, drum 'n bass sounds, etc. It sounds like they want to prove that good music never gets old and, as the years go by, it gains its own consistency. Their music has been always hugely used for several synchronizations too: famous TV commercials, soundtracks for movie, background in radio and TV stations. Emi. 2006
