Swapping producer Jim O'Rourke for fellow Chicago-scene linchpin John Herndon, the Aluminum Group's stunning fourth LP Pelo also exchanges the symphonic flourishes of previous outings for Teutonic bleeps and beats which fuse to the Navin brothers' typically elegant and arch melodies with surprising seamlessness. Electronic textures on an Aluminum Group record are hardly a novelty -- their breakthrough Plano was firmly rooted in synth-pop territory often veering uncomfortably close to the Magnetic Fields -- but the expansive sonic palette of Pelo bears little resemblance to conventional pop sensibilities of any stripe, instead most closely recalling German electro-alchemists Mouse on Mars. Even more remarkable is that the album's innovations don't come at the expense of the Navins' vaunted melodicism -- somehow Pelo's skittering, pulsating rhythms dovetail perfectly with the classicist style and sophistication of "If You've Got a Lover, You've Got a Life," "Satellite," and "Geraldine," further strengthened by the songs' consistently inventive vocal arrangements. ~ Jason Ankeny

| | Aluminum Group Plano CD (1998)
Pelo
$12.49 Aluminum Group's second album betrays an obvious Magnetic Fields influence. One of the two singing Navin brothers even sounds uncannily like the Fields' Stephin Merritt, particularly on the gently percolating "Steam." The Chicago band's other main influence appears to be '70s soft-rock. "Nine Months Later" even quotes Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," and "Angel On A Trampoline" wouldn't sound a bit out of place on any soft-favorites radio station.

| | Aluminum Group Pedals CD (1999)
Pelo
$12.49 Produced by Chicago avant-rock godfather Jim O'Rourke and featuring guest appearances from the High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan, the Mekons' Sally Timms, and violinist Susan Voelz, among others. The Aluminum Group's third album moves far afield from the neo-Bacharachisms of 1995's WONDER BOY and the Magnetic Fields influences of 1997's PLANO. The Jim Webb-like multi-part ...
| | Dakota Suite Signal Hill CD (2000)
Pelo
$20.25 Dakota Suite's Signal Hill is another lo-fi sleeper from San Francisco indie label Badman Recording Company. While the band is from West Yorkshire, England, songwriter Chris Hooson exudes an almost Midwestern feel not unlike that of Josh Rouse or the Red House Painters -- simple, sparse instrumentation and whispered, intimate vocals tell stories of absent lovers and grey evenings. Produced and recorded by band member Richard Formby (Spacemen 3, Sonic Boom), the album has a distinctly analog feel, with idly strummed acoustic guitar intertwining with soaring lap steel, a simple trap kit, and some of the gentlest bass playing on ...

| | Ten Years After Roadworks CD (2006)
Pelo
$15.79 Chick Churchill – keyboardsJoe Gooch - vocals, lead guitarRic Lee – drumsLeo Lyons - bass guitarNearly 40 years after its formation, Ten Years After continues to stand tall among the greatest blues-rock bands ever. The band caused a sensation at the legendary Woodstock Music and Arts Festival in 1969 thanks to their incendiary encore "I'm Going Home," and the dreamy "I'd Love To Change The World" was a huge hit single in 1971. These two songs only tell part of the story of a band whose tireless touring and recording have generated a solid body of work as any in rock 'n' roll history.Keyboardist Chick Churchill, bass guitarist Leo Lyons, drummer Ric Lee (no relation to Alvin Lee) and new vocalist/lead guitarist Joe Gooch are showcasing their considerable talents for audiences all over the world. The quartet's double live album 'Roadworks' -- recorded at concerts in France and Germany in 2004 -- was first released in Europe in late 2005 and it's the follow-up to the studio album 'Ten Years After ...... Now' issued earlier in the year.Ten Years After was re-energized with the addition of Gooch, a 28-year-old stick of singing and playing dynamite. "Joe was recommended to us by Tom Lyons, our bass player Leo Lyons' son. I went to see Joe and was blown away by his playing. I was not surprised that somebody so young was that talented. We were concerned about the age gap, but that proved not to be a problem," says Lee.The Ten Years After story begins in Nottingham, England, in 1967 when already seasoned veterans Lee, Churchill, Lyons and original vocalist/lead guitarist Alvin Lee joined forces and hit the London club circuit in earnest. 1967 will always be remembered as a pivotal year in rock'n' roll, especially the "Summer Of Love." At this time -- and for the next few years -- a blues-rock movement exploded in England. American blues artists often earned greater success and respect in England than at home, and their influence was massive. The Rolling Stones, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, The Yardbirds, Cream, ...
