| | Michael Hurley Snockgrass CD (1980)
Bar Time
$13.39 Only a portion of Hurley's sparse output (dating back to the mid-'60s) remains in print, but in a perfect world they'd be in every home across the land. This 1980 album was his follow-up to the equally essential LONG JOURNEY of 1976. This set features the debut of some of the songs most favored by his devoted following. The first three alone--"Midnight Rounder," "O My Stars," and "Tia Marie"--should be enough to convince anyone that their life can only be enriched by bringing this music along for the ride. His casually rich and elegant songs are given perfect accompaniment by a small ensemble. There's a hominess to the entire set that's positively addicting in its ability to calm a worried heart, warm a winter's night, or cool a summer afternoon. Hurley's droll wit and heartfelt romanticism (never too sweet or at all cliched) imbue his songs with an utterly unique character, but which also strikes a broadly common human chord.
Recorded at Mountanside Studios, Northfield, Vermont. Includes liner notes by Michael Hurley, Jim Macnie, Robin Holcomb, Peter Stampfel.

| | That'll Flat Git It!, Vol. 6: Rockabilly From The Decca Vaults CD (1994) (Import) Germany
Bar Time
$21.15 That'll Flat Git It, Vol. 6 is the second time Bear Family dipped into the vaults of Decca Records to assemble a collection of rare and arcane rockabilly (the first was Vol. 2), and while the results aren't quite as consistently entertaining as its predecessor, Vol. 6 is nevertheless one of the finest installments of the series. The key to its success is how the bizarre backwoods rockers are juxtaposed with country singers like Red Foley, Justin Tubb, Rex Allen, and Red Sovine trying to ride the rockabilly wave. Not all of the songs are strong, but the best -- Billy Harlan's "School House Rock," Lou Graham's "Wee Willie Brown," James Gallagher's "Crazy Chicken," Warner Mack's "Roc-A-Chicka," Eddie Fontaine's "One and Only," Billy Gray's "Tennessee Toddy," Baker Knight & Knightmares' "Bring My Cadillac Back," the Rockin' Saints' "Cheat On Me Baby" and Jerry Engler's "Sputnik (Satellite Girl)" -- are pure fun. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

$6.25 The sultry-voiced chanteuse's entry in the Yuletide release stakes should prove a winner with her fans.
