Capercaillie album
$38.49 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes.
DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as are ...

| | Capercaillie Nadura CD (2000)
Capercaillie songs
$13.49 To a Celtic purist, Scottish/Celtic music isn't something you combine with rock and pop; you treat it like a museum piece and don't do anything to alter it. Thankfully, Capercaillie doesn't see things that way. Bringing a healthy appreciation of rock and pop to the table, Capercaillie favored an expansive approach to Scottish/Celtic music in the '90s, and the Scottish band doesn't lose any of its freshness on 2000's Nŕdurra. Like their previous releases, this CD ranges from instrumental jigs to contemplative vocal numbers that feature Karen Matheson, a jewel of a storyteller who is as expressive in English as she is in Gaelic. Most of the people who acquire Nŕdurra won't understand the Gaelic lyrics of "Tighinn Air A'mhuir Am Fear A Phosas Mi," but one doesn't have to understand the words to feel the warmth and emotion Matheson brings to them. ...
| | Capercaillie: Live In Concert CD (2002) Import
Capercaillie album
$13.45 A true live recording (no studio overdubs or "enhancements") taken from their show at Celtic Connections 2002 finds Capercaillie sounding better and stronger than on their studio releases. Karen Matheson is one of Scotland's best young singers, although much of the band's work has seen her light hidden under a bush, to an extent. Here she shines, particularly on the glorious ballad "Iain Ghlinn Cuaich," where a sparse arrangement ...

| | Iona Book Of Kells CD (1992)
Capercaillie songs
$13.89 This is the second release by the Christian progressive rock band Iona. Like their first release, and now to a greater degree, Iona's music is quite challenging to listen to. With multi-layered instrumentation, forever changing moods, and lyrics that require constant attention, this music is not easily digested. And this 72-minute album, centered on The Book of Kells, necessitates a thorough listen if one desires to understand and appreciate its concept in total. There's plenty to keep one's interest too, like Joanne Hogg's angelic voice, David Bainbridge's skillful guitar work, or the hypnotic flutes, whistles, and Irish pipes. However, inherent with such lengthy albums is the presence of filler material, so if you're in search of inspirational or passionate rock & roll, most of The Book of Kells will undoubtedly fall into the filler category. Actually, this music seems like it's intended for a mystical motion picture soundtrack. In a way, it all ready is. Given the deep thought and consideration required to understand this album fully, it does serve as a soundtrack for the mind's eye. ~ Dave Sleger

| | Thomas Brinkmann When Horses Die... CD (2008) (Import) Digipak; Germany
Capercaillie songs
$17.09 A running joke in the '90s had it that plenty of goth/industrial types ended up in rave culture, whether due to changing tastes or simply because of appreciation of punishing beats -- certainly the roots of so much techno in those styles had always been subculturally clear. So seeing someone like Thomas Brinkmann essentially create his own tribute to those roots with an art/goth album, When Horses Die, is both appropriate and intriguing -- and Brinkmann's hardly hiding it, with his first two thank yous in the liner notes going to Trent Reznor and Winston Tong. Tong himself provided the lyrics to the ruminative opener "Words," with Brinkmann's dark, dry voice speak-singing over minimal keyboards; with that as a clear signpost, When Horses Die proceeds to explore the kind of dark, poetic work in Tong's vein and others, with minimal textures refracted through an often beatless techno lens. The overlay of a slow surging drone and a clipped keyboard melody on "Spiral" and the soft, contemplative wash up and down of gentle synths on "Uselessness" shows how well he can use a simple touch to create a big effect. Most of what beats do appear suggest classic work on Crepuscule and similar labels -- the slow trudge pulse of "Birth and Death" accentuated with ...
| | Joshua Ketchmark List Of Regrets CD (2008)
Capercaillie album
$11.49 Joshua KetchmarkList Of RegretsJoshua Ketchmark has made a damn good soundtrack to his life, and you should care. Why? Because it very well could be the soundtrack to yours. He rocks what he’s lived— from falling in love to crashing into heartache, watching friends self destruct to lifting them higher, searching for truth to landing on the rocks of reality. He delivers it all with melodies and riffs that leave shout-out-loud anthems ringing in your head.Ketchmark grew up outside Peoria, IL, the adopted son of a conservative schoolteacher Mom and blues-loving manufacturer Dad. Straight laced as she was, his mother must have been a closeted music fan, too, because it was in her closet where he discovered an old acoustic guitar and a copy of “With The Beatles” that provided his early inspiration. He was an only child and the guitar he “inherited without permission” became his constant companion. It accompanied him throughout in his teens and on into adulthood, when he trekked from Illinois to Nashville. In Nashville, he added electric guitars, bass and piano to his repertoire, and spent eight years doing what you do in Nashville—making friends, playing live, getting really, really good at songwriting. “It really means a lot to me when someone says they can relate to one of my songs. I try hard to make that connection. I grew up listening to the radio, and when I hear a song from back then it takes me back to those moments in my life. It makes me happy to be on the giving end of that process now.”His collaborations took him to Los Angeles. There, he was fortunate enough to land a dream side gig as a guitar tech, working with legends Rob Cavallo and Jack Joseph Puig, as well as Johnny Lang and Melissa Etheridge. Appreciation of his work led to the use of Etheridge’s famed 12-string on the recording of his debut album, List Of Regrets. The opener, “How 2 Let Go,” percolates with the sound of that 12-string, as Ketchmark sings of a guy whose girlfriend has left him. The familiar heartbreak feeling of “I can’t seem to make it past the coffee today” stings even truer as he hears Elvis Costello play in the background. (Note: Ever bitter about a break-up? Put on “The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes”).Other slices of life include “Now,” a portrait of a friend whose walks on the wild side never find him happiness and “On Your Shoulders” about the passing of his father in 2003. In both songs, the introspective subject matter leap into rousing, anthemic choruses, showcasing what is Ketchmark’s finest songwriting talent: being able to take something intensely personal and make it feel universal. And with his knack for ear-catching melodies, ...
