| | Dusty Wright Dust! CD Dusty Wright Discography of CDs
One wonders if this is what experiencing a good LSD trip was like -- dust! is a delightfully eerie album that sounds about three decades (at least) out of its own time. Anyone looking for a follow-up to Surrealistic Pillow or Notorious Byrd Brothers can random access this CD and find exactly what they're looking for, and the sheer audacity of tracks like "Sway" or "Just Let Go," and their left-turn into bluesy country on "The Ballad of Lucy and Lucky" is par for a delightfully challenging course, filled with surprises that sound like they've been retrieved by time-machine from across the first seven decades of the 20th century -- and sometimes overlaying two decades at once, as on "Strange Lights/Western Skies," which seems to pull in equal measures from '30s country-blues, '60s protest songs, and an early Pink Floyd session or two -- from there to a far-back-in-the-woods ironic country gospel piece called "Karma" might be enough to make one dizzy, except that by the time you get to that number, all of the anchor chains of expectations have been sheered and left behind, and the listener just goes with the flow. ~ Bruce Eder

$15.09 Speed of Life is the first studio album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in five years and celebrates the group's 43rd anniversary with three of its original members still intact (and no, the number 43 was not a typo). It also finds them reduced once more to a quartet with the departure of multi-instrumentalist ...

| | Band Of Heathens One Foot In The Ether CD (2009) Digipak
Dust! CD music
$11.75 As you might expect from a group fronted by three singer/songwriters, the material on One Foot in the Ether is uniformly strong. The band's principals -- Colin Brooks, Gordy Quist, and Ed Jurdi -- all share writing and publishing credits, and since all three play several instruments, the album boasts a diversity of sounds and styles. The first thing that strikes you is how many of these tunes sound like gospel music. Given the name of the band, it's a real surprise. "Shine a Light" is a mellow, call-and-response number with churchy organ, stinging slide guitar, and an uplifting lyric. "You're Gonna Miss Me" is a blues with a gospel tinge, although the lyric is strictly secular. An odd, stuttering, New Orleans backbeat supplied by drummer John Chipman and rousing group vocals make the track take fire. "Let Your Heart Not Be ...
| | Diana Darby Naked Time CDs (2000)
Dust! music CDs
$12.15 Diana Darby's debut came out of left field to handily outshine (at least aesthetically) much of the contemporaneous alt country crowd. Thanks to a keen production sense and sheer songcraft, she's able to wring both substance and resonance out of the postmodern-gothic Americana sounds at which so many lesser acts strive. Her voice is clear and unaffected, and unselfconsciously derivative of Appalachian high-lonesome singers.
Darby's songs combine simple folk-country structures with a touch of subtle pop-rock sensibility, and just the right amount of poetic lyricism, in a manner that would do Townes Van Zandt proud. The icing on the cake is the late-night desert landscape summoned up by the darkly evocative arrangements. Atmospheric guitar backdrops sprawl lazily beneath the songs, generating a sinister undercurrent that recalls vintage American Music Club. The darkness of mood is fairly unrelenting on NAKED TIME, but that's never stood in the way of great art before.
A pomegranate lies dissected on the cover, juice like blood and over a year in Hades worth of seeds spill forth. Listening to this record you have to assume that Diana succumbed just as Persephone did. How else could someone sing "whoever told you life was fair never spent much time sitting in the electric chair" with a laconic huskiness over a gentle pedal steel? Right from the start there is a darkness that even the jangling wind-chimes can't mask. Junebug broods like the oppressively hot Georgian day it portrays. There seems to be something sinister lurking in every corner, where even the Sweet Conversation is "wearing us down to the bone." This is a seriously shadowy album, I mean even 16 Horsepower are known to be lighter. It's like watching an accident, you want to turn away but are drawn in. I'm not trying to put you off, just warn you, I mean I like it, but those of a nervous disposition might want to tread carefully. The playing is first class, subtle and unobtrusive, fitting in with Diana's voice, which is mostly delivered in a slightly sinister hushed croon. This makes it all the more creepy, we're clearly not dealing with ...
