All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Thanks to son Evan Evans, jazz fans have access to the archives of father Bill. Evans's tremendous contribution to modern piano is a given and these homemade tapes provide a tiny window onto the dedicated life of the practicing musician. Though the liner notes provide no recording date, this session was most likely made sometime in the '70s, the last decade of the senior Evans's life (1929-1980).
Evans works out harmonic and rhythmic possibilities on a cross-section of his repertoire as well as some run-throughs of selections from Bach's keyboard touchstone "The Well Tempered Clavier." Upon very close listening, Evans can be heard making comments to some lucky individual whom was in the room at the time. Though lo-fi through and through--even after much use of digital muscle to rescue these rare gems from obscurity--his distinctive touch and unique phrasing are omnipresent.
20 never before heard solo piano practice recordings made by Bill Evans himself in his New York apartment at an unknown date; features originals, standards & interpretations of Bach compositions - the album was remastered with state-of-the-art gear, pres

| | Dee Dee Bridgewater Just Family/Bad For Me CD (1977)
Practice Tape, Vol. 1 songs
$10.49 Even though Just Family was produced by Stanley Clarke and employs a lot of musicians who had jazz backgrounds -- including Chick Corea, George Duke, Airto Moreira, and Bobby Lyle -- this is an R&B album first and foremost. Dee Dee Bridgewater would return to jazz in a major way in the 1980s, but in the late 1970s, she was emphasizing adult-oriented R&B and going after fans of artists like Phyllis Hyman and Minnie Riperton. The strongest tracks on this LP, which was recorded when Bridgewater was 27, range from the playful title song and the Earth, Wind & Fire-ish "Children Are the Spirit (Of the World)" to the dreamy "Sweet Rain" and an emotional cover of Elton John's "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word." Also noteworthy is the Brazilian-influenced "Night Moves," a Michael Franks tune. Those who know Bridgewater for her hard-swinging jazz CDs of the 1980s and 1990s should be warned that Just Family isn't a jazz album at all. It must be judged by R&B standards, not jazz standards -- and from an R&B standpoint, Just Family is generally decent, if unspectacular and uneven. ~ Alex Henderson
Neither 1977's Just Family nor 1979's Bad for Me, the two albums combined for this Collectables release, can be considered Dee Dee Bridgewater's best work, but fans of mature, mid- to late-'70s R&B should find them moderately appealing. Though Bridgewater wouldn't really hit her stride until her return ...

| | Vietnam Past Away CD (2005)
Practice Tape, Vol. 1 CD music
$13.09 Vietnam started out in Atlanta in 1980, at a time when smaller, neighboring city Athens was the music city of that decade. Bands such as R.E.M., The B-52s, Pylon and Love Tractor were tearing up the clubs and getting much love from college radio. Vietnam played the same clubs and got a lot of the same type of praise that was bestowed upon the aforementioned acts, but they never cut an album. Jump ahead 25 years, and we finally have the band’s debut release. The 12 songs on Past Away were all written in 1980-81, and although recorded recently, the quirky nature of that time is alive and well on this disc. Whereas most of the bands of the 1980s New South were guitar/bass/drum configurations, Vietnam featured moog and saxophone, which leads one to wonder if they were too alternative for the burgeoning alternative nation.Lyrically, the songs are direct and almost in your face. ...
| | Xela In Bocca Al Lupo CD (2008) (Import) United Kingdom
Practice Tape, Vol. 1 music CDs
$14.79 "In bocca al lupo" ("in the wolf's mouth") is a traditional Italian phrase wishing someone luck in attempting a difficult undertaking or in the face of dire circumstances. It's also a fitting title for this album, which is among Xela's (aka John Twells) most ambitious, abstract, and yes, difficult music. In Bocca al Lupo is even darker and more conceptual than 2006's magnificent zombies-at-sea epic The Dead Sea: where that album was inspired by Italian horror movie soundtracks, In Bocca al Lupo began as part of an art installation about fear, and its four lengthy pieces aren't so much scary music as expressions of creeping dread and outbursts of terror. The melodies of his earlier Type albums have bled away, leaving the harsh yet strangely lulling electronic noise that gnawed away at the edges of The Dead Sea as the heart of the music. Heavy drones and tolling church bells ...

Practice Tape, Vol. 1 songs
$11.49 So this is growing up.In Julie Corbalis’ first solo effort, “Old Flames and New Names,” followers of the musician’s career will recognize a more mature Jules than the one they first heard sing at Broadway Station in Astoria, Queens, back in September 2001, when the smoke from 9/11 was still stinging our eyes. Those who are new to her music will be left wondering what they missed ...
