If Dirty Three ever learned to rock, this would be the product. Comprised of cello, guitar, and percussion, Telegraph Melts' music alternates between restraint and aggression. Fortunately, the evolving structure of their music is not limited to the usual series of crescendos and decrescendos that so many instrumental acts like Godspeed You Black Emperor, Don Caballero, and Tortoise employ. Rather than altering the mood of a song through sheer volume, Telegraph Melts counters with complexity. "Septembrist" begins with a simple strum, changing the chord from a major to a minor. From the outset the listener is well aware that this will change dramatically, but cellist Amy Domingues manages to surprise with an elegant hum emanating from her bow rather than the typical "hit the distortion pedal now to make the music seem more meaningful" formula. That said, the album is a bit pretentious. A few cuts go on for over four minutes with nothing but guitar and cello interplay, too much for a sound that offers little in audible dynamics. The record can be challenging and rewarding for a patient listener but most, however, will be waiting for post-rock tropes like elaborate builds, inane voice-overs, and keyboard noodling that thankfully never come. ~ Yancey Strickler

| | Scoldees Nightcap World CD (2003)
Ilium music CDs
$6.15 After a three-year wait, Long Island's Scoldees finally returned in early 2003 with their sophomore effort, Nightcap World. The members of this foursome have certainly grown as songwriters and performers since their debut album, My Pathetic Life, as best evidenced by their compassionate harmonizing that suggests considerable amounts of time on the road together. At their best, co-lead vocalists Nancy Sirianni and Jack Hoffmann offer an update of the mystical Buckingham Nicks sound; indeed, few bands but Fleetwood Mac could begin an album with four tracks as strong as the first four here. Album opener "Cocoon" and the character sketch "Just Like Rita" in particular present memorable pictures and find all the bandmembers on the same page. Unfortunately, about midway through, the album dissolves into uneven, forgettable AAA rock and bar blues. A cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You," while respectable, takes no liberties whatsoever, and the last four cuts blur into a wash of snoozy mediocrity. A shame, really: Parts of Nightcap World suggest that the Scoldees have that rare combination of talent and fraternity that can elevate a band to being far more than the sum of its parts. ~ Joseph McCombs
Our 2nd CD was 'highly anticipated', and I'm pretty sure we did not disappoint. We hired the same producer, John Michel, and had some amazing players guest on the record: Jeff Pevar (CPR) is all over the CD, Jon Paris (Johnny Winter) plays harp, Richie Cannata (Billy Joel) and Mario Cruz (Springsteen) both play sax. NIGHTCAP was released in 2003, and for the next eight months, several cuts from the record were added the regular playlists of over 330 radio stations across the country. Most popular radio tunes were: title track NIGHTCAP WORLD (Jack's lead vocal), COCOON (mine), AMERICAN TONIGHT (Jack), JUST LIKE RITA (me). We did a music video of Cocoon, you can find it on youtube.Reviews were again very favorable, and on the strength of the two releases we got a sub-publishing deal with Fintage Music out of The Netherlands, and a licensing deal with a company out of Nashville called BME Music. We had the great pleasure to play a showcase in Leiden, outside ...

| | Rochambeaux Midnight Symphony CD (2007)
Ilium CD music
$9.59 If dark, mellow, soothing rock music is your thing, you'll love Midnight Symphony. If not, someone you know does so steer them this way.The songs on Rochambeaux's Midnight Symphony combine simple rhythm guitars with keyboards and layered vocals to form mostly mellow and melodic songs, and the occasional gloomy heavy tune for you fans of the harder stuff. Rochambeaux began in 1996 when long time friends and musical co-conspirators Paul Schneider (Vocals, Guitars) and Wayne Boyd (Guitars, Keyboards, Drums) began recording songs on their own after years of writing and playing songs in other bands. One day Paul, who prior to this stuck strictly to singing, picked up a guitar and penned the first Rochambeaux song ever, Front Porch. Wayne quickly added some keyboards and a simple drum track to complete the song. The smooth, mellow, dark and gloomy sound they created was so different than the music the two had participated in earlier . Right away, they knew they had found something completely new to them, and Rochambeaux was born. Soon after the two began writing more songs, while experimenting with home recording and trying ...
