| | Charles Mingus Mingus In Europe, Vol. 2 CD Charles Mingus Discography of CDs
The second release from the Wuppertal, Germany concert of Mingus's Spring 1964 tour of Europe, this is by far the most intensely documented period of his career. Of all the releases from this tour, only these two volumes on Enja and the Paris concert issued on Prestige are legitimate issues. The sound is decent enough, considering the state of the art in 1964. The band played only a small number of different tunes in this period; this disc features a unique duo version (Byard and Mingus) of Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady." ~ Stuart Kremsky
This CD reissues three selections originally on the LP Mingus in Europe, Vol. 2 ("Orange Was the Color of Her Dress," "Sophisticated Lady" and "AT-FW-YOU") and also includes two performances ("Peggy's Blue Sky Light" and the nearly 23-minute "So Long Eric") that do not seem to have been issued previoously. The 1964 Charles Mingus Quintet (trumpeter Johnny Coles had departed a few days earlier due to illness) teamed together the unique multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, tenor-saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Jaki Byard, drummer Dannie Richmond and the bassist/leader in one of the great bands of the 1960s. There are many recordings currently available from their European tour and all are worth acquiring including this excellent Enja set (at least by Mingus fans not already owning Vol. 2). ~ Scott Yanow

Mingus In Europe, Vol. 2
$12.29 Conte Candoli (trumpet); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Emil Richards (marimba); Keith Mitchell (bass); Earl Palmer, Stan Levey (drums).
Originally released on Reprise (6019), Reprise (6049) & Reprise (6073).
This double CD is more about Barney Kessel the studio player than Kessel the jazz guitar legend. Still, this compilation of three LPs originally released between 1961-1963 has some good music, and Kessel the jazz man is not entirely absent, even though the settings do not call for him to stretch out.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is Kessel's handling of Henry Mancini's music from the classic Blake Edwards film with Audrey Hepburn. With a number entitled "Moon River Cha Cha," listeners pretty much know what's in store for them with this set: instrumental treatments of pop music that was riding high both on the airwaves and on the big screen. The tracks are brief and the playing doesn't stray far from the arrangements. The Bossa Nova session is a step closer to jazz, but the context is still a commercial one. Kessel surprises with a twangy personality right out of Steve Cropper's work with the MG's or Mickey Baker's extroverted solo ...
| | Lee Morgan Sonic Boom CD (1967) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Mingus In Europe, Vol. 2
$9.45 Sonic Boom was not released until 1979 and then remained in print only for a brief time before eventually being reissued years later. In addition to the great trumpeter Lee Morgan and a fine rhythm section (pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Billy Higgins), the well-rounded set is a bit special for it allows the often R&B-associated tenor David "Fathead" Newman an opportunity to stretch out in a more challenging setting than usual. Highlights include the funky "Fathead," the complex "Sneaky Pete," Morgan's lyricism on "I'll Never Be the Same," and the infectious rhythms on "Mumbo Jumbo." This is an undeservedly obscure session. ~ Scott Yanow
This is indeed a welcome curiosity. The 2003 version of Lee Morgan's Sonic Boom was recorded in 1967, was not released until 1979, and then was quickly deleted. When it was reissued on CD in the 1990s, it was only in print for a short time as well. While one might think the third time is the charm, you'd have to reconsider. Blue Note has made the set available as part of its so-called connoisseur series, meaning it will only be available for a limited time once more. Issued in glorious 24-bit remastered sound, Sonic Boom is here re-released along with a huge bonus, a 1969 session that was originally the latter ...
| | Seven Steps: The Complete Columbia Recordings Of Miles Davis: 1963-1964 CDs (2004) Limited Edition
Mingus In Europe, Vol. 2

All tracks have been digitally mastered using 24-bit technology.
In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, often in a live context.
Davis was seeking the right combination of musicians for his sonic flights, where hard-bop and modal styles could be combined with a wide-open, increasingly elastic sound. Before settling on Shorter (present here), he tried the conventionally hearty, blues-accented bop approach of saxophonist ...

| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Mingus In Europe, Vol. 2
$12.89 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release ...
