| | Cornelius Claudio Kreusch Black Mud Sound CD Cornelius Claudio Kreusch Discography of CDs
It is a measure of how powerful a pianist Cornelius Claudio Kreusch is that he was able to get altoist Kenny Garrett to be on his quartet CD Black Mud Sound. Whenever Garrett is heard performing modern and complex music that is also freewheeling, it is a recording well worth getting. The polyrhythms on this set, which are occasionally funky but always adventurous (sometimes a bit reminiscent of the early M-Base music), inspire the altoist to play at his most passionate and creative. The music is often danceable but never predictable. As for Kreusch, he is tied to the jazz world without sounding at all derivative, and his sound and chord voicings are his own. In addition, the surprising song quotes by Garrett and Kreusch will make one smile. This underrated set is well worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York on December 20 & 21, 1994 and February 28, 1995.
Personnel: Cornelius Claudio Kreusch (piano); Hassan Hakmoun (vocals, sitar); Kenny Garrett (saxophone); Anthony Cox (bass); Marvin "Smitty" Smith (drums).
Down Beat (2/96, p.42) - 3.5 Stars - Good/Very Good - "...Kreusch digs into what jazzers call da funk and infuses modern modalism with fresh vigor, spine and spunk--make that da groove....broad, colorful melody strokes, keyboard-based and section-driven syncopation..." JazzTimes (5/96, p.77) - "This young Austrian pianist has gathered a superb supporting cast...in taking a fairly auspicious sophomore crack as album composer and leader. His lean, pointed piano leans into single-note lines..." Option (5-6/96, p.117) - "...an accomplished, hard-swinging pianist..." Cornelius Claudio Kreusch Black Mud Sound Songs | 1. | So! |

Brian McKnight's smooth vocals, melodic keyboard-based tunes and honest lyrics help define a style of R&B that has been scarce in the '90s. On his third set, McKnight continues to touch the heart with his soulful grooves and heartfelt ballads. Although a guest appearance from Mase on "You Should Be Mine (Don't Waste Your Time)" makes for a great pop hit, McKnight's ...
