| | East Side Story Vol. 6 CD
There's something surprising and annoying about this CD, an extraordinary collection of late-'50s to late-'60s rock & roll and R&B classics in decent sound. The disc covers some bases that are usually overlooked in the typical oldies compilation-Jimmy Clanton's "Just a Dream" is the most familiar song here, and neither he nor it are exactly part of every record collection. The real highlights are titles like Brenton Wood's soft, sweet "I Like the Way You Love Me," Gene Chandler's soaring "I Fooled You This Time," the Gallahads' achingly lyrical "Lonely Guy," Don Julian's slow rocking "Lowrider Girl," and Etta James' brooding, violin-laden 1961 "At Last." Not all of the songs are quite up to their standard -- Tommy McClain's "Sweet Dreams" is too pop-oriented, and Rene & Ray's "Queen of My Heart" is downright strange with its odd, off-key touches. Rounding it out are such relatively obscure numbers as "So Dearly" by Rosie & Ron, "I'm Leavin' It All Up to You" by Dale & Grace, and, perhaps better known, "Baby, Baby All the Time" by the Superbs, featuring Eleanor "Punkin' " Green. One wishes the programming were more generous than a paltry 12-songs, and that there'd been some notes as well. ~ Bruce Eder East Side Story Vol. 6 Music East Side Story Vol. 6 Songs East Side Story Vol. 6 Review

East Side Story Vol. 6 album
$11.59 Donnie Elbert's initial run as a solo artist happened in the late '50s with a series of singles recorded for the King subsidiary Deluxe. All of those sides are collected here, including his one chart hit, the soul-squeezing falsetto masterpiece "What Can I Do." Elbert spent the next decade as a soul gypsy traveling from small label to even smaller label for a single or two before moving on to the next (don't worry, he eventually found a home in the '70s with All Platinum). Added to the Deluxe label catalog here are several sides recorded for the Gateway label in 1964, including a nice ballad, "Who's It Gonna Be," and three pleasingly danceable Motown sound-alikes, "Lily Lou," "Do Whatcha Wanna," and "Run Little Girl." There's also an outtake version of "I Want to ...

East Side Story Vol. 6 CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding ...

East Side Story Vol. 6 songs
$19.99 Twenty-six of the duo's 1964-1967 recordings (five previously unissued) for the Kent and Modern labels are on this compilation. Note, however, that this is just a partial retrospective of their mid-'60s work, since during this time the Turners were also releasing sides on several different other labels. It remains, though, a good sampling of their sound during this era, when their soul tracks still betrayed much of their blues/R&B roots, and before the arrangements had gotten as heavy ...
