On the band's debut album, you can hear Capercaillie mapping out what would become its signature sound -- a musical style built on a deep foundation of Celtic tradition but incorporating modern technology and dance-oriented rhythms. It's a fusion that makes purist folkies cringe, but Capercaillie has achieved significant success with it. Crosswinds is more traditional than the band's later efforts; although synthesized keyboards and distinctly non-Celtic percussion are used throughout, the album is dominated by sets of traditional dance tunes and songs like "My Lagan Love." If there's a complaint to be made at all, it's that the lustrous voice of Karen Matheson is too rarely placed front and center. She opens the album with a lovely piece of puirt a beul (a rhythmic singing style used in Scotland to accompany dancing), and practically steals the show with her rendition of the gorgeous "Soraidh Bhuam Gu Barraidh." The instrumentals are also excellent, but not quite as distinctive as her singing -- strangely, the funk basslines that play such an important part in Capercaillie's musical strategy are kept far back in the mix. ~ Rick Anderson
Recorded at Cava Studio 1, Glasgow, Scotland in July, 1986.

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Crosswinds music CDs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Crosswinds songs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman ...
| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
Crosswinds album
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality to them. Despite the sheer force of the music, this release is ultimately marked by well constructed melodies and intriguing ...

Crosswinds album
$11.99 Trying to describe or explain the kind of music that Marc Olsen plays is like trying to hold on to fistfuls of sand. As soon as you think you have a firm grasp, it slips through your fingers. It's hardly an exaggeration to say that Olsen is one of the most unique voices to emerge from the Seattle music scene over the past decade. A uniquely gifted guitar player who replaced longtime Patti Smith collaborator Ivan Kral in Sky Cries Mary at the precocious age of 21, he went on to bend the shape of the Seattle sound in influential Northwest trio Sage before striking out on his own. Since then, he's released two solo albums and toured both on his own and as a guitarist for Mark Lanegan. Now he's back with his third and most accomplished album, Brighter When. A hauntingly gorgeous collection of 11 songs produced and recorded by Olsen and his brother and remixed by Tucker Martine, it's destined to once again send critics scrambling for appropriate descriptions.PRAISE FOR MARC OLSEN'S PREVIOUS SOLO ALBUMS"Beautifully, emotionally twisted narcotic blues." "Ghostly, dark and private."The Rocket"Call it roots music, call it Americana, call it what you want. This is ...
