Beating Harps
$13.65 CELTIC THUNDER THE SHOW, the audio companion for the popular PBS television special, showcases the five Irish vocalists in their ideal setting, a stage in Dublin. Celtic Thunder thrives on the contrast of its various voices (four tenors and a baritone) creating a surreal musical landscape. Paul Byrum's assured operatic tones on "Remember Me (Recuerdeme)" crest against ...

| | WCBS FM-101 History Of Rock: For Lovers Only Vol. 4. CD (1993)
Beating Harps
$10.59 Collectables' History of Rock: For Lovers Only is an enjoyable, if unexceptional, four-volume set that collects some of the most romantic pop, R&B, and doo wop singles from the late '50s and early '60s. The fourth volume, containing 14 selections, features the Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes for You," the Dreamlovers' "When We Get Married," Little Anthony & the Imperials' "Tears on My Pillow," the Chantels' "Look in My Eyes," the Dubs' "Could This Be Magic," and the Three Friends' "Blanche." It provides a good balance between well-known hits and regional obscurities, but it isn't a definitive look at the era. However, it fits the purpose alluded to in the title just fine. It must be noted that a similarly titled set dedicated to New York's WCBS -- an oldies station -- contains the same exact songs found here. ~ Andy Kellman
Collectables' four-volume For Lovers Only series is an enjoyable, if unexceptional, set that collects some of the most romantic pop, R&B, and doo wop singles from the late '50s and early '60s. Somewhat confusingly, it came in two different versions. There's a "general" version, and then there is a version of the set that is presented as if the play list of New York's WCBS dictated the selections. However, there is no difference between the corresponding volumes. WCBS' fourth volume, just like the fourth volume of the general set, contains 14 selections. They include the Flamingos' "I Only Have Eyes for You," the Dreamlovers' "When We Get Married," Little Anthony & the Imperials' "Tears on My Pillow," the Chantels' "Look in My Eyes," the Dubs' "Could This Be Magic," and the Three Friends' "Blanche." ...

Beating Harps
$13.15 Just because the Battlefield Band has been going for over 30 years doesn't mean they've run out of things to say. On the basis of Road of Tears, they remain quite thought-provoking. If not exactly a concept album, it's certainly a thematic record, around the idea of emigration and populations on the move (for many reasons). That's a perennial topic, but one that retains its currency in this day and age. With a new singer/guitarist (Sean O'Donnell) but customarily fine playing, they tackle a wide range of material, from the original title cut to Robert Burns and even Woody Guthrie -- with, of course, a fair sprinkling of tunes and songs from the tradition. The playing is as stunning as ever, if lovingly understated, and there's a sense of passion and commitment in every performance here. It's almost as if they've found a new cause and new ...
| | Peter Sprague Taking It All In CD (2005)
Beating Harps
$18.99 Here is a collection of tunes designed to spin acoustically, with low production and executed in real-time. I have my own recording studio and along with this comes the possibility of creating multi-layered music sounding a bit larger than life. I love this setup but for a change I felt inspired to make a recording of music that captures the way we sound when we play live. I've enlisted my favorite players and we brought our long list of experiences both musical and humanistic into the studio. In the span of two days we documented this experience into the digital realm. And now, Taking It All In is complete and it joins the family of jazz CD's that I've created over the years. The early recordings (Dance Of The Universe, The Path, Bird Raga, Message Sent On The Wind, Musica Del Mar, and Na Pali Coast) set the stage and mapped out the roots, and now Taking It All In sheds the light of the new millennium onto my view of an acoustic jazz quartet digging into some improvisation. I hope it sounds good to you...Peter Sprague, August 2005The musicians on the CD are:Peter Sprague - guitar Tripp Sprague - saxophone and fluteBob Magnusson - bassDuncan Moore - drumsAll songs are composed by Peter Sprague except Travels by Pat Metheny.
