Liz Carroll is a noted fiddler in the Irish tradition who has taken the instrument and music in exciting new directions with her virtuosic playing. Here, Carroll is not only an interpreter, but a composer, writing 11 of the album's 15 songs herself. Accompanied sparely by the talented guitar of Daithi Sproule, Carroll runs through an energetic set with enough fabulous fiddle runs and turns toward emotion to keep any fan of the instrument thoroughly enthused. Just when the lament "Tune for Mairéd & Anna Ní Mhaonaigh" starts becoming too sad, it gives way to the scrappy "Sock in the Hole/Hole in the Sock," where hundreds of little high notes act like happy needles in your neck. Elsewhere, a series of reels is made consistently interesting by Carroll's unique style, which seems to drop odd notes into the gaps between bars and measures. Best might be "Clarke's Favorite/Pigeon on the Gate," which plays urgent high parts off of dark-toned bottom notes for a truly wild ride. Liz Carroll's good for listening, better for dancing, and great for Irish and traditional music in general, since it proves Carroll to be as adept a songwriter as she is a player and only suggests what tantalizing places she'll take the music next. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Liz Carroll Lost In The Loop CD (2000)
Liz Carroll CD music
$13.45 Although she'd been active as one-third of the brilliant Trian, Chicago-born Celtic fiddler Liz Carroll hadn't recorded a solo album since 1988 until she released Lost in the Loop in 2000. Predictably, it's a showcase for her fabulous fiddle playing, but her backing musicians are high-caliber as well: Carroll is joined by guests like her Trian bandmate Daithi Sproule (of Altan) and members of Solas. It's a welcome return, and one that makes clear the reason Chicago mayor Richard Daley declared "Liz Carroll Day" following her festival performance there. ~ Steve Huey

| | Richard Shindell Somewhere Near Paterson CD (2000)
Liz Carroll music CDs
$17.69 Though Richard Shindell's music has been categorized under the "folk" rubric, that label tells only part of the story. The instrumental skeletons of these songs are built upon plucked acoustic guitar and the lyrics sketch out a world-weary cast of characters with a rare kind of writerly precision, but Shindell isn't afraid to bring electric guitar, driving drums, and Celtic accents into the mix where needed.
The album-opening "Confession," which is bathed in sheets of electrified guitar, is a first-person account of a Wall Street rainmaker's search for meaning in his life. Though he boasts to a bartender that he "can make a quarter million / Just walking in [his] sleep," he's plagued by nightmares and inexplicable fits of hysteria. Other highlights include the buoying "My Love Will Follow You," whose backing harmonies, courtesy of Lucy Kaplansky and Dar Williams, lend a graceful and affecting streak. "Spring," which celebrates the yearly miracles that attend the season, is elevated to instrumental majesty by the deft interplay among wooden flute, bodhran, cittern, and fiddle. A thoroughly impressive offering.
SOMEWHERE NEAR PATERSON is a revelation. From REM-like folk to gorgeous 3-part harmonies (featuring Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky), and intoxicating Celtic reel and even some Texas string band music. SNP is a powerful, dark, yet ultimately irresistible experience. This album is a masterwork in Shindell's already ...
| | Kevin Burke Celtic Fiddle Festival CD (1993)
Liz Carroll songs
$13.45 Recorded live at Mercy Academy Auditorium, Merion, Pennsylvania on November 8, 1992; University of Wisconsin Music Hall, Madison, Wisconsin on November 15, 1992; Fairchild Auditorium, East Lansing, Michigan on November 18, 1992.
The original CELTIC FIDDLE FESTIVAL captures this ensemble at their musical peak. Ten years after this concert was released, Scottish fiddler Johnny Cunningham passed away. The group subsequently reformed with André Brunet, but Cunningham's death signaled the end of an era.
On this date, the trio plays a mixture of jigs, reels, and airs. "Dionne Reel/Mouth Of The Tobique" is a particularly celebratory number. This upbeat reel sees all three fiddlers sawing away, while guitarist John McGann holds down the fort rhythmically. "Mist Covered Mountains of Home" is a beautifully nostalgic air that conjures up images of the Scottish countryside. Here, the fiddle is played longingly as it mimics the timbre of a human voice. "Music For A Found Harmonium / La Partida / Roumanian Tune / Calgary Polka / Leaving Brittany" encompasses many different folk styles, from Ireland to Alberta, Southeastern Europe ...

| | Pono Mao Tse-Tung's Bar Mitzfah Was 13 Years, 13 Months, And 13 Days Before Gandhi's C CD (1999)
Liz Carroll songs
$10.15 Mao Tse-tung's Bar Mitzvah...is the first release from Pono. Pono is a 10 year musical experiment started in 1998 and ending in 2008 for those who believe in swordfish. This album combines softer lo-fi tracks invoking Cat Power to anthemic tunes like "End of Meaning". There is some general weirdness in between - Pono's trademark. Although eclectic and lo-fi this album is smartly produced and definitely listenable. This is what Cd Baby Magazine said about Pono:Attacking the boundaries of modern musicA journey into the future of music, and with its ups and downs, you'll have to be prepared for a wild ride. Imagine if you will, that you are trapped on an elevator with Beck, The Velvet ...
