| | Stereolab Switched On CD Stereolab Discography of CDs
SWITCHED ON STEREOLAB compiles Stereolab's first three vinyl releases: SUPER 45, SUPER-ELECTRIC EP, and STUNNING DEBUT ALBUM, all from 1991 and all previously unavailable in the U.S.
Confusion arises over Stereolab's early releases because nearly all of the band's initial singles, EPs and albums feature slight variations of the same cover image, an early-'70s German cartoon of a grinning, long-haired man pointing his finger, which slowly turns into a gun, culminating in the gun being fired. This also explains why Stereolab's first album is called PENG!, German for "bang!" SWITCHED ON collects ten of these early single and EP tracks, detailing the early development of ex-McCarthy members Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier's near-obsessive marriage of taut krautrock rhythms courtesy of former Chills bassist Martin Kean and ex-Faith Healers drummer Joe Dilworth, Sadier and second vocalist Gina Morris' languid, deadpan vocals, and Gane's own guitar and analogue synths. These early-'90s recordings show Stereolab in its formative stages, tentatively mapping out ideas later refined and perfected. As such, it's a fascinating and engaging disc.

Switched On album
$10.19 For its second album, LONG-DIVISION, Low drops the tone considerably from the band's previous outing. Each note seems to exist in its own vacuum, reverberating until it fades out. Far sparer than anything else one is likely to hear under the guise of "alternative music," this record is all about negative space--how each sound reminds you of the silence it replaces. This time around, new bass player Zak Sally, who replaced John Nichols, joins Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker.
When the record opens with the shimmering guitar notes of "Violence," and Sparhawk sings "Wasted good silverware on you," it comes off not as the insult ...
| | Stereolab Refried Ectoplasm, Switched On Vol. 2 CD (1995) Switched On 2
Switched On CD music
$14.69 REFRIED ECTOPLASM is a compilation of rare tracks, most of which were originally released on 7-inch vinyl between July 1992 and March 1994, and two previously unreleased tracks.
Stereolab's REFRIED ECTOPLASM is a collection of limited-edition vinyl singles the band has been releasing on its own Duophonic Super 45s label, as well as other hard-to-find doo-dads from throughout its lifespan. It's like a career overview without all the stuff you've heard before. As such, it defines Stereolab's musical aesthetic as well as any of their other "albums": driving, electric-organ-drenched, VU-propelled space-pop whose wide-eyed beauty is balanced by its sheer simplicity and by Laetitia Sadier's minimalist vocal delivery (often in a foreign tongue).
Mostly, Stereolab's is a thick, airborne drone, but one that is all-encompassing enough to sound pretty on some occasions and difficult on others. On the one hand there are the actively odd studio sounds, and wide-ranging Beach Boys-like harmonies that bring their pop virtues to the fore ("Lo Boob Oscillator"); on the other hand, ...
| | Stereolab Peng CD (1992) Reissue
Switched On music CDs
$10.15 Originally released in 1992, PENG! is the second full-length album by sonic experimentalists Stereolab. Sometimes jam-packed with thundering keyboards and driving drums, at other times ethereal, airy and light, PENG! captures this thinking man's band at the early stages of its prolific career. Emulating aspects of the Velvet Underground's rhythms as well as the Moog-happy keyboard euphonies of the early 1970s, Stereolab's far left-of-center pop vision has always been something of a love-'em-or-hate-'em proposition.
Longtime fans familiar ...
| | Small Faces Ogden's Nut Gone Flake CDs (1968) England; Deluxe Edition
Switched On songs
$33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley Unwin narrates the concept suite "Happiness Stan," but the music is strong enough to withstand the novelty tag. OGDENS' NUT GONE FLAKE was the Small Faces' swan-song, at least until an ill-starred reunion, but it proved a fitting end to a golden era.

| | Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD (2005)
Switched On album
$12.19 The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven.
Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's ...

Switched On CD music
$17.55 Letting go of the "magic" in its name only to use it for the title of this album, the Mushroom Band released their last effort in 1994, before being put on everlasting hiatus in favor of their little brother, Astralasia. After the "back to basics" sound of RU Spaced Out 2, Magic welcomes back the spacy synthesizers and adopts a more artificial sound palette. Kicking off the album, "When Dreams Collide" immediately sets the pace: the drum programming is back, the keyboards are swirling, and the song is a nice, psychedelic pop anthem trapped inside a cold electro-pop frame. Things get much better afterwards, especially in the Gong-esque "Overlife Sensation" (and its menacing half-time bridge). "Halfway Down and About to Fall" and "Denmark Elephant Grey" have a distinctive Ozric Tentacles feel to them (the latter despite a lead acoustic guitar track). Marking the mid-point of the album, "There's the ...
