From the psychedelic tribal blues opener "Dark Road" through to the end of the album, Christopher shows just how strong the second-level psychedelia of the late '60s could be. There was no shortage of great musicians hailing from Texas during the era, and the ones who remained in the state were forming some of the most idiosyncratic bands of the swirling, inventive times: top-flight bands such as Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Lost & Found, the Golden Dawn, and Christopher. Christopher, though, cannot exactly be lumped together with those peers. They had to leave Texas for California to make their mark, and indeed, Christopher owes a good deal to the music of that state -- songs such as "Magic Cycles" and "In Your Time" are informed by the dreamier qualities of the San Francisco sound, especially the extended atmospherics of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. There are also hints of fellow Los Angeles bands the Doors and Spirit throughout the album, and like the best music coming out of California, the songs on Christopher sound somehow revolutionary and foreboding, as if there is something dark lurking just beneath the surface of the music. Occasionally, Christopher occupied similar musical territory as Cream. They were not unfamiliar with the blues, and, like the British supergroup, they were an absurdly powerful three-piece with an abundance of ability in both instrumental and songwriting proficiency. In addition, Doug Walden's vocals are a dead ringer for Jack Bruce. With that said, the album actually sounds quite different from Cream. Christopher are somehow both more mystical and earthy. "Dark Road" starts out with a loping, jazzy blues groove before being propelled forward by a tempo change and some brilliant, musical drumming. "Wilbur Lite" seems grounded by some slashing chording by Richard Avitts, but then an open-ended melody and upward bass progression raise the song up off its legs. "Queen Mary" rolls along on top of a choppy drum beat and bass groove until Walden's phenomenal spine-tingling vocals soar above the music, uncontainable. The music itself, however, never spins out of restraint. The songs are all relatively succinct, never growing excessive or dull, and Avitts' guitar playing is economical. The lyrics can get a bit pretentious here and there, but that doesn't even really qualify as a minor flaw since it is a product of ambitiousness and the era. Christopher is one of the finer albums to have fallen completely through the cracks of the '60s, and Christopher one of the era's best forgotten bands. One wishes that they had stuck around long enough to create more music. ~ Stanton Swihart

5 stars GREAT PSYCHEDELIC ALBUM!
I picked this up mainly out of curiosity, and I am real glad I did! This is an incredible record--the songwriting and musicianship of these guys is absolutely mindblowing! There are no weak tracks on this album. Extremely creative stuff. My personal favorite is "Queen Mary" but they're all very good.

Stone Garden hailed from a state one could assume was among the last touched by the chemical stimulant-inspired revolution in rock music in the '60s. But you wouldn't be able to tell that from Stone Garden. Cobbled together from live and studio recordings made between 1969 and 1971, the reissue collects virtually every available note by the pack of Idaho teens, including both sides of their lone, extremely rare 45 ("Oceans Inside Me"/"Stop My Thinking"). Aside from that single, all the tracks remained unreleased until appearing as a superbly packaged 1998 Rockadelic LP, reproduced ...

A favorite among some collectors of rare late-'60s/early-'70s psychedelic albums, Dragonfly's self-titled LP is a not-so-finely balanced mixture of the sort of overwrought bluesy hard rock by bands of the period like Iron Butterfly with the poppier, more power chord-driven hard rock of the late-'60s Who. While it might be predictable for a critic to prefer the Who influences to ...

Adam Plack and Yaron Fuchs provide the Persian-flavored musical backdrop of A GIFT OF LOVE, but the real focus of this inspirational recording is the poetry of the 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi. Deepak Chopra is joined by a host of famous friends including Madonna, Martin Sheen, Demi Moore, Goldie Hawn, and others, reciting Rumi's poems about life, love, spiritual awareness, and worldly delights. The result is an album that will soothe both the ear and the soul. Deepak Chopra's album features the voices of Madonna, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, and other stars, providing the project with instant allure, while bringing in a little street cred via civil rights activist Rosa Parks and Buddhist scholar Robert Thurman. Chopra would have been wise ...

Dynamite
Jamiroquai Dynamite CD  (2005) Australia

Christopher
CD $11.05  3.3 stars
On 2005's DYNAMITE, Jamiroquai mastermind/vocalist Jay Kay stays deep in a funk/disco groove. While most of the album consists of up-tempo dance-floor-ready tunes, most notably the "Night Fever"-like title track and the bass-driven "Starchild," there are detours into mellower territory, particularly the slow jam "Talulah" and the string-laden "World That He Wants." Kay also takes time to contemplate his favorite subject--expensive automobiles--on the uncharacteristically rocked-out "Black Devil Car." While the British group doesn't cover much new ground here, DYNAMITE's immediate appeal proves that innovation isn't necessarily a key part of the Jamiroquai sound. Kay and company simply want to provide a fun, funky time, and that's exactly what listeners will get. Not unlike one of its lead singer Jay Kay's much publicized Lamborghinis, the U.K. funk band Jamiroquai is primarily a vehicle for its frontman's various fetishes. Which is another way of saying that Kay loves disco and fancy retro sneakers and he wears both well. He has done so ever since he hippie-danced his way out of the acid jazz ghetto of the early '90s with Jamiroquai's revelatory debut album, Emergency on Planet Earth. That album featured Kay's bright and soulful vocals against '70s-style funk and drew obvious comparisons to Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, and sundry other icons of vintage R&B. Not too much has changed in the years since and 2005's Dynamite finds Kay and Co. delving once again into various '70s- and '80s-inspired dance sounds. Similar to 2001's dazzlingly slick Funk Odyssey, Dynamite reveals Kay as a dancefloor eclectic, inclined to grab as much from Chic and Parliament as Kajagoogoo, the Police, and Terry Callier. Keeping to this grab bag aesthetic, Kay makes the most of his experimentation with some "vocal bass synthetics" on the hard funk title track. Also engaging is the melancholy soul-folk of "Seven Days in Sunny June" and the similarly quiet storm-ready ballad "Talullah." On the funky side of things, "Starchild" finds Kay proclaiming the coming of a disco superman while "Time Won't Wait" is an infectious Off the Wall-era Michael Jackson boogie fest with Kay urging people to make their dreams come true over a bed of pulsating disco beats. The Jamiroquai faithful would accept nothing less. Soul Calls One Journey Within
Saranya Soul Calls One Journey Within CD  (2006)

Christopher
CD $25.35
Spirituality is a quiet inner quality that eclipses all boundaries of land, caste, profession, and religion, - and it manifests in many ways. For those whose spirituality seeks an ever deepening personal peace, the music of the SOUL CALLS provides a peaceful, soothing vibrational environment for the heart and mind of the listener. For those who are actively engaged in the interior life of loving God, the lyrics of the SOUL CALLS affirm the longing for and the presence of the Divine Beloved. Touching the heart of the peace-giver, the spiritual seeker and the devotee alike, the SOUL CALLS take the consciousness within ~ to the place of peace. SOUL CALLS ONE ~ JOURNEY WITHIN is the first of a trilogy of CD’s recorded in Kolkata, India with world class Indian musicians. In these inspired songs, Saranya gives voice (in English) to the deepest yearning of the soul ~ union with the Divine Beloved. JOURNEY WITHIN calls to many aspects of the Divine, but most soulfully to Divine Mother as it traces the soul’s journey within, entreating Her to come and lift the devotee out of the grasp of Maya, safely into Her arms of Love; the soul’s true home. The first Soul Call affirms the peaceful presence of Divine Mother as the holy vibration of Om. In the second track the soul begins to awaken from it’s spiritual amnesia and longs for emancipation into the Light, Love, and secure unending Peace and Joy of God. In track three, the devotee affirms that with all sincerity and without end, the desire for contact with the Divine Beloved ~ God ~ will be the constant soul call. Feeling the pangs of separation, in the fourth Soul Call the devotee appeals to Divine Mother to come soon and show Herself and to assure the devotee of Her ever-present protection. In track five the devotee explains the depth and breadth of the love and need the soul has for Her. In track six, the devotee-child asks the Mother to take the soul upon Her lap of omnipresent love and comfort it with enlightenment. The Mother responds in track seven, with a lullaby reminding the child to be still and go within where She is ever waiting: “I’m here, My child; don’t fear, My child. I’m here inside with you….” Giving assurances of Her waiting, loving, protecting presence within, the Mother speaks to the devotee and tells Her soul-child to seek Her in the stillness within, through silent meditation and by loving Her. In the last Soul Call, the journey within has changed the devotee’s ...
