Yancy Derringer was the sort of faceless hard rock band that bogged down the mid-'70s in banal, redundant musical mediocrity that actually benefited, as impossible as it is to believe, from the excessive glittery onslaught of disco. The Monroe, WI-based band played their brand of straight, no frills, bar-boogie blues at various Midwestern clubs, universities, and festivals throughout the middle of the decade. Ultimately they cut this album, reissued in 1999 by Gear Fab, in 1975. Perhaps the band was a live powerhouse, but Openers retains no charm -- if it ever had any -- even as a severely dated artifact. Lead vocalist Charlie Kulchur sometimes sounds like a less unconventional, more good-time rock prototype for Perry Farrell, but that hardly recommends the music. Frankly, with music so pedestrian it is difficult to differentiate one song from the next -- the tunes all fall into the same general drum and bass-led rhythmic bottom, the same glass-rattling piano (or, when the band gets adventurous, Moog synthesizer) that drones in all the wrong ways. To be fair, it does rock in a macho, chest-hair-bearing '70s hard rock sort of way, but outside of biker bars, this doesn't seem the sort of music to inspire anything other than boredom. ~ Stanton Swihart
Yancy Derringer was a four-piece band from Wisconsin that recorded an album titled Openers in 1976. With an original pressing of only 1000 copies, the album reflected the band's live act and creative talents in seven original songs. The sound of Yancy Derringer was similar to that of some of the more hard driven southern U.S. rock acts of the day such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Ozark Mountain Daredevils and many more. After selling out the initial thousand pressings very quickly, the band ordered a second pressing, which got caught up management hassles and was delayed. This caused fans to lose interest in the band; by 1976, the group's momentum had passed Yancy Derringer broke up, leaving the world with another limited pressing album. In the late '90s, Gear Fab acquired the rights to the band's original masters and released that long lost album for fans of '70s rock to enjoy. With detailed band history and song information as in all Gear Fab releases, Yancy Derringer can now take its place in the history of American rock music. ~ Keith Pettipas
high energy rock 'n roll from 1974 from Madison, Wisconsin-based band - it's loud & driving, similiar in style to the style of early Humble Pie, inc. the pot anthem "Weedburner" Yancy Derringer Openers Songs Openers Review

Openers music CDs
$11.59 By the sound of Hard Heart Singin', Douglas Fir must have been a smoking little blues-rock combo. They may have existed purely as a bar band, but the Pacific Northwest dives where they honed their sound must have been some pretty trippy little establishments, as evidenced by the brooding, ominous, mildly psychedelic (depending on your definition of the genre) nature of their rock & roll. Everything about the music is coated in a dense, smothering atmosphere (in a good way), as if it is all emanating from a small box rather than ...

Yet another rock band that emerged out of the copious student population of countercultural Wisconsin, Tongue spent ten years developing into one of the most road-savvy ensembles in the state. But Keep on Truckin' was recorded near the beginning of their career, thereby capturing the band during the early peak of their powers. That ...

| | Steve Vai Alive In An Ultra World CDs (2001)
Openers songs
$16.09 ALIVE IN AN ULTRA WORLD was composed and recorded at concerts in various countries, reflecting elements of the traditional music of the cultures in which they were recorded.
"Whispering A Prayer" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Steve Vai is nothing if not a highly ambitious guitar virtuoso. ALIVE IN AN ULTRA WORLD is a unique live album in that it is wholly composed of special songs written specifically for (and dedicated to) 15 nations along THE ULTRA ZONE 2000 tour trail. Each song either employs traditional music elements of the subject country or pays homage to them through the lyrics. It is interesting to note that many of these songs came together during soundchecks in as little as 15 minutes. As Vai is well-versed in an eclectic range of music styles, the songs on this two-disc set are stylistically diverse. The tracks with vocals reflect the flavor of traditional folk anthems, and the instrumentals are rife with various scales, customary instrumentation, and of course, Vai's inimitable guitar technique.
Includes liner notes by Steve Vai.
Personnel: Steve Vai (vocals, guitar); Dave Weiner (acoustic & electric guitars, sitar); Mike Keneally (spoken vocals, guitar, keyboards); Philip Bynoe (spoken vocals, bass); John Pustai (spoken vocals); Scott Palacios, Bob Carpenter (accordion); ...
