Recorded live between 1993 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Hans Nagel-Heyer.
One of the more impressive "Young Lions" to come out of straight-ahead jazz in the 1990s was Harry Allen, a tenor saxophonist with a breathy, appealing tone along the lines of Stan Getz, Lester Young, and Zoot Sims. Allen (who shouldn't be confused with the hip-hop journalist) is no innovator; although Love Songs Live! was recorded live in different parts of Europe from 1993-1996, it recycles the jazz of the 1940s and 1950s. But there's no law stating that every jazz musician who comes along has to be an innovator; jazz has room for both innovators and traditionalists, and Allen is definitely an example of the latter. As its title indicates, this German release is a collection of live performances of ballads. Most of the time, Allen turns his attention to standards that jazz fans have heard time and time again, including "Stardust," "Every Time We Say Goodbye," "But Beautiful," and Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," and one can't help but wish that he would surprise us occasionally and make some less obvious choices. Instead of giving the jazz world yet another version of "Sweet Lorraine," how about surprising listeners with some gems that haven't been done to death? But Allen plays so soulfully and has such an appealing tone that one is inclined to be forgiving. All things considered, this pleasing, if predictable, collection paints an attractive picture of the Young Lion. ~ Alex Henderson

Love Songs Live! album
$12.99 The turn of the 21st century found post-rock entering its post-Mogwai phase, and a number of likeminded souls found themselves in sway to the quiet-loud-quiet (or loud-quiet-loud) muse. Japan's Mono were no exception, and they do an exceedingly exemplary and dynamic version of it. Although some may find it formulaic, the template is laid out on their debut, Under the Pipal Tree, bizarrely issued on John Zorn's Tzadik imprint, a label known more for skirting the far fringe of free jazz than for indulging in mono-lithic instrumental rock. Although Mono would go on to craft more nuanced, classical-influenced ...

Love Songs Live! music CDs
$14.69 The original Bay City Jazz Band lineup was only a footnote in the history of Dixieland; formed in 1955, the outfit recorded two LPs for Good Time Jazz (whose catalog is now owned by Fantasy) before breaking up in 1957. But they were an enjoyable footnote, and tuba player Mike Waldbridge (of Salty Dogs fame) thought enough of their work to assemble a new BCJB lineup 45 years after the original lineup's demise. In early 2002, Waldbridge recruited two members of the old '50s band (trumpeter Everett Farey and drummer Lloyd Byassee) and united them with several Dixieland veterans who had belonged to the Salty Dogs at some point, including trumpeter Bob Neighbor, banjo player Jack Kuncl, pianist John Cooper, and the late trombonist Jim Snyder. Waldbridge's new BCJB lineup recorded Alligator Crawl in July 2002 -- only five months before Snyder's death from lymphoma -- and this CD contains the trombonist's final recorded performances. Because Alligator Crawl only employs two members of the BCJB's '50s lineup, some Dixieland fans might wonder if perhaps this group should be using a different name. But, in fact, Alligator Crawl is quite faithful to the spirit of the old BCJB; '20s-minded performances of Jelly ...

Love Songs Live! songs
$14.45 Chieli Minucci, the leader of Special EFX, is an excellent guitarist with a style sometimes hinting at early George Benson. His brand of crossover music has catchy melodies, danceable rhythms and concise solos. Got It Goin' On has short spots for three different crossover saxophonists (Jeff Kashiwa, Kim Waters and Marion Meadows) but the focus is mostly on the leader and the appealing ensembles. While Minucci's individual originals are not particularly memorable, his music is accessible and works well both as background music and for dancers. ~ Scott Yanow
