As was the custom of the day, Brenda & the Tabulations' debut album was overstuffed with familiar cover versions, which were done respectably; actually, the sultry, drawn-out reading of "Summertime" is really good, as is the calypso-ish take of the Marvelettes' "Forever." There are also a few more originals by the Brenda Payton-Maurice Coates team responsible for "Dry Your Eyes," including the low-charting single "Just Once in a Lifetime"; this has a similar marriage of doo wop-type vocals with the lush orchestration for which Philadelphia soul was famous. The album had yet two more small soul hits in "Stay Together Young Lovers" and Smokey Robinson's "Who's Loving You?" The CD reissue adds two bonus tracks, including "When You're Gone," a minor 1968 hit in which the vibes and trembling violins brought the group closer to the mainstream of symphonic Philly soul production. ~ Richie Unterberger
R&B/soul album originally released in 1967 for the first time on CD, 14 tracks including 2 bonus tracks, featuring a version of Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By" & the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go", including original packaging, rare photos & interviews

| | Very Best Of The Originals CD (1999)
Dry Your Eyes CD music
$6.99 All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology.
The Very Best of the Originals includes their hits from the late '60s through the mid-'70s, along with some LP cuts, B-sides, and unreleased tracks. The first six songs were produced or co-produced by Marvin Gaye in 1969 and 1970 (including the hits "Baby I'm for Real" and "The Bells"). These have been sometimes cited as forerunners to his What's Going On album, but it would be wrong to view them as a What's Going On supplement. They're in much more of a lush, group vocal, sweet soul style, although some traces of ideas Gaye would play with in the early '70s are present, particularly in the way the background voices weave around each other. The ...

Dry Your Eyes songs
$15.59 Although a couple of the groups on this compilation of Philly soul from 1964-71 are well known (Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Brenda & the Tabulations), the Fantastic Johnny C's "Boogaloo Down Broadway" and the Tabulations' "Right on the Tip of My Tongue" are the only cuts that will be readily recognizable to general fans. It's a grab bag of odds and ends, most fairly interesting. The Volcanos were one of the first groups that Gamble & Huff worked with, and several members would resurface in the Trammps. The two Harold Melvin cuts were done back in 1964, when John Atkins and not Teddy Pendergrass was the lead singer; "Get Out (and Let Me Cry)" is a nice, murky-fidelity Northern soul-type stomper. "The Touch of You," a substantial ...

Dry Your Eyes album
$12.39 Recorded between 1969 & 1971. Includes liner notes by Bill Dahl.
Digitally remastered by Tom Moulton & Greg Vaughn (Frankford Wayne Mastering Labs, New York, New York).
Unfortunately original release information is not given with this package. But it can safely be deduced that this includes most or all of the tracks from their eponymous 1970 Top & Bottom LP, as well as some non-LP singles ("Right on the Tip of My Tongue" and "A Part of You") and one previously unreleased track, "Sha Na Na -- He Loves Me." Basically, then, it's a survey of their 1969-1971 Top & Bottom output, entirely produced by Van McCoy. The Brenda & the Tabulations/Van McCoy collaboration marked a real high-water mark in Philly soul that deserves wider historical recognition. Certainly there was little, if any, soul produced in the city outside the Gamble-Huff and Thom Bell empires that was of such a high standard. Philly sweet soul was rarely more melodic ...
