(1 Customer Review)
Swedish bass player Jonas Hellborg and American guitarist Shawn Hellborg have worked together in a variety of settings since the mid-'90s. On ZENHOUSE, the percussionist Apt. Q-258 (who first became noticeable--and how could he not be with a moniker as fine as that?--with Bruce Hampton's Aquarium Rescue Unit) joins the acoustic duo.
ZENHOUSE was recorded live before a small audience at an art gallery in Southern Sweden. The four improvisational pieces are built on the characteristic musical personalities and tonalities of each of the players. The modal nature of the music allows fluid entry points for soloing as well as for quickly responsive interplay. Hellborg's chosen instrument is an acoustic double-neck bass guitar and his approach straddles the world of the bass and the guitar, at times making his and Lane's playing sound like it's all coming from one enormous warm and richly wooden resonator.

Zenhouse
$13.79 Of the many stunningly beautiful albums recorded by bassist Jonas Hellborg, this is perhaps the most consistently lovely. Technically, this is a trio album -- Hellborg is joined by guitar wizard Shawn Lane and Indian percussionist V. Selvaganesh -- and although Hellborg will inevitably be cast as the leader in a setting like this (he's the only one of the three with composition credits on all tunes), there is an admirable equality of presence between the three. Lane is a truly awe-inspiring ...

Zenhouse
$13.79 Bassist Jonas Hellborg, guitarist Shawn Lane (one time Black Oak Arkansas member at age 15) & drummer Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit) present electric jazz recorded from various concerts in Germany. The songs were played by the trio from 1996-97, but we
The albums that bassist Jonas Hellborg has made with guitarist Shawn Lane and drummer Jeff Sipes (aka Apt. Q-258) have all been an invigorating blend of jaw-dropping virtuosity and immediately accessible melodic ...
| | Jonas Hellborg Temporal Analogues Of Paradise CD (1996)
Zenhouse
$13.79 This classic album is now being remastered, repackaged and re-released. Recorded on a 1995 tour of Europe, it has captured a lot of attention since its release in 1996. At the start, it's just a simple bass figure: two notes repeated slowly. But over the
Here's another stunningly beautiful Jonas Hellborg album with another misleadingly dorky title (cf. Octave of the Holy Innocents, Ars Moriende, etc.). The dorkiness of the title is misleading because it's simply ...
| | Jonas Hellborg Time Is The Enemy CD (1997) Remastered; Reissued
Zenhouse
$14.29 Ex-John McLaughlin electric bass guitarist Jonas Hellborg gains considerable notoriety for his flashy style, huge sound, undeniable virtuosity, and monster chops. This recording showcases his trio on various concert dates worldwide, with electric guitarist Shawn Lane and drummer Jeff Sipe in tow. It is Lane who steals the show -- his fluid, exciting, stinging lines need nothing more than a little amplification to get the point across. The power trio acts as Beck, Bogert & Appice wannabes, except that Lane plays perfectly in tune. All the members claim co-writing credit on the six hard-nosed jams. "Heretics" is a heavy metal New Orleans shuffle, with boogie bass and a finger-popping solo from the leader. "Wherever You Walk" has a cool swing funk about it that is undeniably jazzy, featuring Lane's clean, musical, teeth-gritting guitar. Darker rhythms ...

| | Jonas Hellborg Abstract Logic CD (1995)
Zenhouse
$13.79 The billing implied that Abstract Logic was to be a blowing session, especially given Shawn Lane's performances on the MVP recordings Centrifugal Funk and Truth in Shredding. Surprisingly, this recording tends to be dark, with the players utilizing a fair amount of space. Lane sounds positively demonic ...

$16.05 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
As a sort of follow-up to Art Pepper's matchup with Miles Davis's trio in the 1957 classic Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Pepper utilizes Davis's sidemen on this 1960 near-classic. In addition to pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, trumpeter Conte Candoli makes the group a quintet on four of the eight numbers. The CD reissue adds "The Way You Look Tonight" (formerly only available on another LP) and an alternate take of the title cut to the original repertoire. This time around, rather than emphasizing standards, Pepper performs just three ("Softly, ...
