| | Jay-Z The Blueprint 3 CD (2009)
Webster Hall's New York Dance CD CD music
$15.65 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter. Kanye West is in the producer's chair for seven tracks, and it's clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original. "What We Talkin' About" begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z enumerates ...

| | Fat Joe Loyalty CD (2002) Edited
Webster Hall's New York Dance CD songs
$10.59 The Bronx's favorite son, the portly Hispanic rapper known affectionately as Fat Joe, has been kicking street-real rhymes for years, whether on his own or bolstered by an impressive posse including the likes of Big Pun. No matter how gangsta he gets, though, its difficult not to like Fat Joe, whose warm, organic lyrical flow is more engaging than off-putting. Thematically, he's more focused on old-school braggadocio than on any overt threats of crime and violence. Like any good rapper, Fat Joe makes himself his main subject on LOYALTY. Production that mixes pop-friendly hooks and bubbling funk with R&B and cutting-edge hip-hop provides just the right framework for Joe's vibrant raps. Stellar guest appearances from Scarface and Ginuwine don't hurt the proceedings either.
Loyalty is the name of the game for Fat Joe this time out, as it relates to fans still true to the Bronx's hardest rapper despite chart success with Ashanti, his own loyalty to his hardcore past considering there's a spate of joints for the ladies this time out, and having his loyalty to deceased partner Big Pun questioned by Pun's widow in a highly publicized radio bout just before the album's release. Driven by the breakout of his Ashanti duet "What's ...

| | Green Carnation Quiet Offspring CD (2005)
Webster Hall's New York Dance CD music CDs
$6.35 With their carefully considered fusion of hard rock bite and commercial appeal, gothic-tinged post-metal bands like Green Carnation, Anathema, and Lake of Tears are starting to look like the 2000s equivalent of '80s AOR groups like Journey, Styx, and Foreigner! Granted, there's no comparison in terms of geography (Europe vs. USA), or platinum awards earned (err, none vs. a whole lot), but consider that rock & roll's stature is significantly inferior in the 2000s than 20 years prior; and that both generations of bands evolved, by and large, from progressive metal/rock origins and...woooaaaah! Anyway, with or without such far-fetched conspiracy theories, suffice to say that Green Carnation fans have had to be very open minded as they watched the monolithic doom metal of their debut give way to their second's hour-long album suite (hello -- progressive!), followed by a sudden swerve toward conventionally sized, commercial metal songs with their third, A Blessing in Disguise, and then, finally, even more of the same for 2005's The Quiet Offspring. So for those fans who have stuck around (unlike most of the band's original membership) and new arrivals alike, suffice to say that the songs making up The Quiet Offspring follow a loosely conceptual premise based on childhood experiences, but otherwise stand utterly independently ...
