Recorded live at Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, England on January 26, 1995. Includes liner notes by Peter Erskine.
Although he departed from this realm much too early, pianist/composer Don Grolnick left a legacy of great jazz. This documentation of one of his final performances finds Grolnick in the company of some of his closest musical friends. Michael and Randy Brecker, Don Alias, and Peter Erskine performed and recorded with the pianist countless times, never more wholeheartedly as they do here. Filling out the rest of the stellar ensemble is multi-instrumentalist Marty Ehrlich, trombonist Robin Eubanks, and bassist Peter Washington.
Grolnick's warm personality came through in every musical situation in which he participated. Here, compositions like the gliding "Heart Of Darkness" and the playful "Or Come Fog" display the pianist's penchant for marrying the traditions of the past with an expansive, contemporary approach, all with a tasteful touch that was his signature. The stirring ballad "Five Bars," yet another example of Grolnick's superior craftsmanship as a composer, features moving performances from Ehrlich on bass clarinet and Michael Brecker on tenor. The penultimate moment of the set occurs with the closing performance of the classic "What Is This Thing Called Love," featuring a stunning opening solo by Grolnick and his unforgettable arrangement that is greatly energized by percussionist Don Alias.
The world of music lost one of its true poets when Grolnick passed away in 1996; fortunately, his art lives on with this live recording made in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall during what turned out to be his final jazz tour - the performance features Mich

$12.95 Bay Area jazz-jam supergroup GARAJ MAHAL has become the sixth act signed to Harmonized Records, the offshoot label from LEEWAY'S HOME GROWN MUSIC NETWORK, in its first year of operation. Called "one of the most talked about groups in jazz and jam today" by Mountain Express, GARAJ MAHAL unites one of jazz's most innovative performers, bassist Kai Eckhardt, with acclaimed classical/jazz guitarist Fareed Haque, drummer Alan Hertz and prodigious young keyboardist Eric Levy. Between them, the members of GARAJ MAHAL have accompanied the likes of Sting, Dizzy Gillespie, Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola, Steve Smith's Vital Information, Bela Fleck, Bill Evans, John McLaughlin Trio, Steve Kimock, KVHW, Edgar Meyer and dozens ...

London Concert songs
$14.55 Chris Potter took his electric band, Underground, on the road throughout 2005, trying out new material and working through some of his gems. This Sunnyside date is the first time this band has been in the studio together. Underground features Potter playing tenor saxophone exclusively, guitarist Wayne Krantz (in a rare sideman role to be sure), Craig Taborn on Fender Rhodes, and drummer Nate Smith. Right, that's not an error: there's no bassist. The program is diverse, featuring six Potter originals and some startling choices for covers: ...

London Concert music CDs
$7.59 AWB's artistic winning streak continued with its outstanding fourth album, Soul Searching. Interestingly, this wasn't an album that enjoyed a great deal of publicity or that contained a lot of major hits. In fact, its biggest single, the dreamy "Queen of My Soul," only made it to number 21 on Billboard's R&B albums chart. But thanks to the devoted following AWB had acquired since signing with Atlantic in 1974, Soul Searching went gold. Indeed, AWB aficionados ...
