Marmoset: Jorma Whittaker (vocals, bass); LonPaul Ellrich, Dave Jablonski (guitar); Jason Cavan (drums). Recording information: Echo Park Studios, Bloomington, IN (1997-1998). Editor: Mark Maher. Unknown Contributor Roles: Jason Cavan; Jorma Whittaker; LonPaul Ellrich; Dave Jablonski. There's something in Marmoset's sound that's reminiscent of indie-rock in the early 1980s -- touches of the occasionally dark, Velvet Underground-influenced jangle of the Feelies, Mission of Burma, the less cutesy work of the Television Personalities, even the later work of Wire. On the other hand, there's also the jerkiness of a band like Slant 6, a bit of new wave, and a slight resemblance to early Unrest -- to Marmoset's credit, none of these references can really capture the unique but still familiar sound they've crafted. Today It's You offers a slew of rather brief songs in this vein, and while some are not entirely engaging, others are constructed in such interesting, off-kilter ways that they wind up being quite good ("Shatter the Lovely," "Speakers," "Laugh Giraffe"). ~ Nitsuh AbebeCMJ (4/26/99, p.29) - "...TODAY IT'S YOU evokes images of a troubled human being....paints an unglamorous portrait of sex, drugs, sleaze and general bad taste....Particularly effective..." | | Emerson, Lake, And Palmer Works Volume 1 CDs (1977) (Import) United Kingdom
Today It's You
$22.35 UK remastered reissue of the progressive rock supergroup's 1977 album with 3 live bonus tracks 'Tank', 'The Enemy God Dances With The Black Spirits' & 'Nutrocker'. 2001.
Liner Note Authors: Martyn Hanson; Bruce Pilato. Recording information: Indiana (01/24/1978). Arrangers: Greg Lake; Keith Emerson; Carl Palmer. Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio's members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group's awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes' most recent records. The result was this double LP; essentially three solo sides and one group side, it is the most complex and demanding of the group's albums. Keith Emerson's "Piano Concerto" is on the level of a good music-student piece, without much original language. Where Emerson, in conjunction with his conductor and co-orchestrator, John Mayer, succeeds admirably is in writing beautiful virtuoso passages for the piano. Greg Lake's romantic songs mark the final flowering of his work in this vein -- and perhaps its going to seed, since "C'est la Vie," the featured single, says little that "Still...You Turn Me On," from their previous album, didn't say better and shorter. Carl Palmer's side is the most accessible of the three solo sides for casual rock listeners, rocking hard on the classical adaptations and featuring Joe Walsh on lead guitar for one song. The group's two tracks, "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Pirates," cover a lot of old ground, albeit in ornate and stylish fashion. Having used Copland's "Hoedown" as a concert showstopper for four years, the trio takes "Fanfare" to new heights of indulgence, and it actually works, up to a point -- like CCR's extended version of "Heard It Through the Grapevine," this is just a little too much of a good thing. ~ Bruce Eder Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. | | Shag CD (2005)
Today It's You
$11.59 This Milwaukee, Wisconsin band are best remembered by their 1967 psychedelic 45 "Stop & Listen." What is not known about them is their 1969 studio recordings made at Pacific High Recorders in San Francisco. Shag layed down some excellent tracks during do
Personnel: Michael Lamers (vocals, whistling, autoharp, drums, percussion, gong, Theremin); Gordon Elliott (vocals, guitar, harmonica, congas); Green Greenwald (vocals, soprano flute, alto flute, alto saxophone, Wurlitzer organ, drums, percussion); Donald Luther (vocals, bass guitar, percussion). Liner Note Authors: Roger Maglio; Gordon Elliott. Recording information: Pacific High Recording Studio, San Francisco, CA (1969). Shag is not a great album qua album (mainly because it was not intended as an album at all) but is certainly strong enough to suggest how impressive a band Shag was at the height of its abilities. And that makes it another eminently worthwhile (if not indispensable) archival find by the folks at Gear Fab. In fact, the collector community to which the specialty reissue label caters had for years been aware of the quartet's prowess on the basis of a 45 cut in its earlier incarnation (when a "the" still came affixed to the band name). At the time calling Milwaukee, WI home, the Shag cut the garage-psych gem "Stop and Listen" on Capitol Records in 1967, a song that, decades later, would be a minor ...
