| | Nirvana Bleach CD (1989) Deluxe; Deluxe Edition
What We Defend album
$13.19 With a sludgy, chainsaw guitar sound that owes as much to early Black Sabbath as to Kurt Cobain's heroes The Melvins, whose drummer puts in an appearance here, Nirvana emerges from Seattle's underground scene as standard-bearers of a style that embraces the anger and energy of punk alongside the thick, muddy sonic attack favored by early '70s proto-metal bands. Cobain's lyrics are fueled by outrage and self-loathing, combining literary flair with a direct, visceral quality that makes him a viable candidate for the John-Lennon-of-Gen X award.

| | Clarks Live CD (1999) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
What We Defend music CDs
$15.05 Recorded live at Nick's Fat City and The IC Light Amphitheatre, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania between September 18, 1998 and July 20, 2001.
A regional favorite in the Pittsburgh area, roots rockers the Clarks have a thing or two in common with many of their peers, such as the BoDeans and to some extent Gin Blossoms -- they've never come across a harmony they didn't like, nor a nice tight guitar riff. The twang on usually unmemorable tracks like "Over Me" and "Help Me Out" appears much stronger in this fashion alongside so many formulaic pop songs. Their attempts at covers, though, are extremely brutal, as a stab at the Prince song "Kiss" is dreadfully abysmal. The live audience helps out in the energy department, often singing along on songs such as "Penny on the Floor" and "Last Call." The musicianship is another plus, but too often these songs seem to ...

What We Defend album
$10.95 When this came out in 2003, it marked the first studio release by the Yardbirds in 35 years. In that time, of course, the personnel had changed quite a bit. Even those inclined to get excited by reunions of great bands should know right off that it includes just two original members, drummer Jim McCarty and rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja (though Jeff Beck plays guest guitar on one number, "My Blind Life"). Rounded out by three "new" members (including bassist John Idan, whose lead singing sounds fairly close to original Yardbirds vocalist Keith Relf in style and tone), the record also features ...

| | Serena Jost Closer Than Far CD (2008)
What We Defend album
$9.59 Serena Jost is a Swiss-American singer/songwriter and cellist living in New York City. Her new record, Closer Than Far, was produced by Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson) and mixed by Brad Albetta and Brian Fulk at Monkeyboy Studios in NYC. This stunning debut features Serena singing and playing guitar, cello and piano. Some of NYC’s tastiest musicians help to bring these remarkable songs to life, which “seamlessly merge classical and pop melodies”. (Lucidculture) ***SIGNED COPIES OF CD ALSO AVAILABLE*** Time Out New York / Issue 667 : Jul 10–16, 2008, Top live showsSerena Jost, Barbès; Thu 10"Serena Jost writes gently eccentric songs and sings them in an elegant alto, often accompanying herself on cello, but it isn’t quite right to call her a singer-songwriter. The term art song—normally tied to 19th-century concert music—usefully characterizes Jost’s carefully arranged pieces and succinct lyrics, neither quite rock nor folk.If this sounds a bit highbrow, fear not. One of the highlights of both Jost’s live show and her recently released CD, Closer than Far, is a straightforward, almost rollicking take on Iris DeMent’s bittersweet “Our Town.” Several of her own catchiest vocal hooks (such as on “Vertical World” and “Halfway There”) basically consist of one note, relying on the instrumental chord changes underneath to give them momentum. The slightly old-world, cabaret quality of Jost’s music should be underscored by the intimately curtained back room at Park Slope’s Barbès." — Bob Bannister, Time Out New York"A few years back Serena Jost was a member of the modern progressive cello trio Rasputina. We hesitated to even mention this fact, however, because Jost's own music comes from an almost completely different universe. Whereas Rasputina incorporated elements of industrial rock and chamber/classical music, Closer Than Far presents subtle and intriguing ...
