If you slowed down the tempo of indie rock bands like Pavement or Sebadoh, it would probably sound like the unhurried debut from Havergal. Ryan Murphy (who also runs Western Vinyl records, through which he released his first two 7"s) steers these lo-fi arrangements, sounding like a lonely soul from Slackerville. His drum machine provides static, while Murphy's lyrics are often a downer, singing verses such as "hey kids don't grow up like me/'cause I haven't stretched a single inch." ~ Kenyon Hopkin

Lungs For The Race album
$13.05 Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner, the men behind Mouse On Mars, have a rare talent for accessible eccentricity. Their playful electronic concoctions, full of bulbous noises and weirdly wired rhythms, slap a broad, beaming grin on the occasionally dour face of digital music. Perhaps no other outfit frolics as nimbly between dance music, pop, ...

| | Breeders Title TK CD (2002)
Lungs For The Race songs
$9.09 It may have taken nearly a decade for The Breeders to deliver a follow-up to 1993's critically and commercially acclaimed LAST SPLASH, but TITLE TK does not disappoint, as Dayton's Deal sisters continue to serve up their brand of oddly patched-together pop. With lo-fi engineering deity Steve Albini manning the board, The Breeders return with a stripped-down sound that manifests itself on off-kilter cuts like "Sinister Foxx" and the shambling, gloriously dissonant "Too Alive."
Although the pace throughout is decidedly low-key, the decidedly tart harmonies the Deals sprinkle throughout TITLE TK ...
| | Interpol Turn On The Bright Lights CD (2002)
Lungs For The Race album
$10.15 To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do it is indefinable, perhaps it's just a trick of the light, or the life that breathes gloomily, radiantly throughout, but it's undeniable.
