Spicing up the Swedish rap-metal with some Middle Eastern melodic flavor and more dynamic vocals, this eponymous release added a much-needed dimension to Clawfinger's six-year-old approach to industrial hard-hop. Choice cuts like "Chances" have the incredibly fat guitars, fresh textures, and hooks to prove producer Peter Reardon's considerable knob-twisting abilities and world music vision. While Clawfinger has its expansionist moments, the Swedish outfit was not going to abandon its mostly monochromatic and mechanized signature sound on this, the band's third full-length release. The middle section of Clawfinger, with songs like "Not Even You," "Nobody Knows," and "Wrong State of Mind," features material that carries the same Kool Moe Dee vocal delivery over mostly by the numbers industrial metal guitar washes. Clawfinger reached their musical peak with the release of their genre-bending debut, and they earned the resulting critical praise and Euro-award hardware soon after. But by the 1999 (U.S.) release of this self-titled disc, many American rap-rock and industrial metal artists like Rage Against the Machine and White Zombie had done much better work with the musical amalgams, leaving these Scandinavians in a relative stasis, which this eponymous disc did little to excite. ~ Vincent Jeffries

Originally released in 2001, this is the debut album by mysterious Norwegian producer/multi-instrumentalist/sampling whiz Kaada. Despite being widely hailed by critics in Scandinavia, it took Ipecac Records, who discovered the album via an unsolicited copy, for it to finally get a U.S. release in 2003. It's a fitting match, since this album has the same kind of warm, reverb-y production that Ipecac head honcho Mike Patton often favors (see Fantomas' Director's Cut), and has a collage-type avant-garde pop/rock feel that's not a million miles away from something like Director's Cut or Mr. Bungle's California. Then again, it's certainly not beholden to those influences either: the main inspirations here seem to be hip-hop (especially in terms of the production) and old American R&B and soul music, combined with an unusually user-friendly experimental streak. With their self-titled debut, Theory Of A Deadman became the flagship act for Nickelback's label 604. Another fringe benefit came by way of the SPIDERMAN soundtrack, where this Canadian quartet's "Invisible Man" not only appeared, but the band's guitarist Tyler Connolly was invited to team up with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger on the mega-hit "Hero." Kroeger further helped out by co-writing half of the material on Theory Of A Deadman's debut. In a quest to "appeal to 16-year-old girls as well as 35-year-old guys," Connolly steeps most of his subject matter in the muck and mire of love while tending a garden of crunchy riffs and pounding rhythms.
Songs like "Nothing Could Come Between Us" and the chugging bittersweet "Point To Prove" switch from devotion to devastation on a dime while the squalling "What You Deserve" strikes a pose of defiance in the face of a flamed-out relationship. Aside from the introspective and anti-suicide "The Last Song," Theory Of A Deadman keeps it basic for fans looking for a fix between Nickelback and Creed albums.
