For those who remember Karl Agell and Phil Swisher from Corrosion of Conformity (COC), one cannot stress enough that COC and Leadfoot are two very different bands. You won't find a trace of thrash metal or hardcore punk on Take a Look, Leadfoot's second album, nor will you find a heavy sociopolitical agenda. What you will find are a lot of slow, gritty hard rock grooves with Southern leanings -- when the Raleigh, NC-based band rips into Southern-fried numbers like "Blowhole," "Unkind" and the single "Redline," it's obvious that singer Agell and bassist Swisher have long since left COC in the past. Some of the grooves illustrate Leadfoot's appreciation of ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Leadfoot's Internet website celebrated the Southern connection by exalting the band's previous album, Bring It On, as a "redneck masterpiece." While using a word as strong as "masterpiece" to describe Leadfoot's material is going overboard, Take a Look is solid, enjoyable and certainly rockin'. ~ Alex Henderson

Take A Look album
$52.15 HOTCAKES & OUTTAKES was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes.
Based in their original incarnation around the genius of Lowell George, Little Feat's legacy has left them overlooked by the general listening public, despite a wide-ranging style that embraces blues, country, gospel, jazz, and funk. This sumptuous four-CD set impressively chronicles this mercurial band's pre- and post- Lowell George journey with rare photos, essays, and track-by-track reminisces from band members, along with a disc chock-full of rarities and outtakes.
Throughout HOTCAKES, it's hard to disagree with liner notes author Bud Scoppa's opinion that Little Feat is as rootsy as the Band, as funky as the Meters, and as cerebral as Steely Dan. Early numbers like "Willin'," "Tripe Face Boogie," and "Cold, Cold, Cold" find Little Feat going from eclectic country-fried boogie, to a syncopated New Orleans sound upon the arrival of Sam Clayton and Kenny Gradney, to more familiar fare like "Dixie Chicken" and "Fat Man in the Bathtub." By the time George cut his only solo album THANKS I'LL EAT IT HERE (represented here by "20 Million Things"), Little Feat were disbanding, but they regrouped ...

| | Clutch Pitchfork & Lost Needles CD (2005)
Take A Look music CDs
$10.69 Includes the complete PITCHFORK 7" EP (1991) and rare bonus tracks.
Pitchfork & Lost Needles includes Clutch's debut 7" in its four-song entirety and augments that with unreleased tracks and demo versions. As this set proves, the veteran quartet began as a band crouched between the Melvins, a viscous form of hardcore (think a slower, more economic Sick of It All), and the literate but still loud post-punk of Jawbox. "Wicker" is in blistering half-time, its layers of needling guitars and Neil Fallon's yawping proclamations ("Pacemaker! LIFE TAKER!") skinned to their barest, most powerful essence. "Arcadia" is three minutes of stocky thud, the sort of thing flannel-shirted bullies would blast from crappy boom boxes in the early '90s. The unreleased tracks are equally strong, from the low-slung grind of the perfectly named "Nero's Fiddle" to the relatively upbeat "Passive Restraints," a song tailor-made for ...

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Take A Look album
$13.58 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it ...
| | Lita Ford Wicked Wonderland CD (2009) Bonus Tracks
Take A Look CD music
$14.19 Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair metal rockers Nitro, and started a family. In addition, she relocated to the Caribbean. Wicked Wonderland is uncharacteristic of the pop-metal she released a decade ago. It's an in-your-face metal record, but ultimately it's a very studied and calculated 21st century pop-metal record. It's an album with explicit sexual content, examining S&M, bondage, power exchanges, and all manner of kink and crave in lyrics, words, and sleeve images. Ford wrote all of these songs with her co-producers Greg Hampton and Gillette. Gillette is also either a duet partner or backing vocalist on every track here. Hampton handles bass, keyboard, and other sonic duties, and there are a pair of drummers who alternate in Chris Collier and Stet Howland. The album's first single (and longest track), "Bed," was released exclusively to Stockroom.com, ...
