For those who remember Karl Agell and Phil Swisher from Corrosion of Conformity (COC), one cannot stress enough that COC and Leadfoot are two very different bands. You won't find a trace of thrash metal or hardcore punk on Take a Look, Leadfoot's second album, nor will you find a heavy sociopolitical agenda. What you will find are a lot of slow, gritty hard rock grooves with Southern leanings -- when the Raleigh, NC-based band rips into Southern-fried numbers like "Blowhole," "Unkind" and the single "Redline," it's obvious that singer Agell and bassist Swisher have long since left COC in the past. Some of the grooves illustrate Leadfoot's appreciation of ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Leadfoot's Internet website celebrated the Southern connection by exalting the band's previous album, Bring It On, as a "redneck masterpiece." While using a word as strong as "masterpiece" to describe Leadfoot's material is going overboard, Take a Look is solid, enjoyable and certainly rockin'. ~ Alex Henderson

Based in their original incarnation around the genius of Lowell George, Little Feat's legacy has left them overlooked by the general listening public, despite a wide-ranging style that embraces blues, country, gospel, jazz, and funk. Throughout HOTCAKES, it's hard to disagree with liner notes author Bud Scoppa's opinion that Little Feat is as rootsy as the Band, as funky as the Meters, and as cerebral as Steely Dan. Early numbers like "Willin'," "Tripe Face Boogie," and "Cold, Cold, Cold" find Little Feat going from eclectic country-fried boogie, to a syncopated New Orleans sound upon the arrival of Sam Clayton and Kenny Gradney, to more familiar fare like "Dixie Chicken" and "Fat Man in the Bathtub." Pitchfork & Lost Needles includes Clutch's debut 7" in its four-song entirety and augments that with unreleased tracks and demo versions. Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair metal rockers Nitro, and started a family. In addition, she relocated to the Caribbean. Wicked Wonderland is uncharacteristic of the pop-metal she released a decade ago. It's an in-your-face metal record, but ultimately it's a very studied and calculated 21st century pop-metal record. It's an album with explicit sexual content, examining S&M, bondage, power exchanges, and all manner of kink and crave in lyrics, words, and sleeve images. Ford wrote all of these songs with her co-producers Greg Hampton and Gillette. Gillette is also either a duet partner or backing vocalist on every track here.
