DVD. Japanimation. Hit animated feature film by Mamoru Osh ii. In Engl & Japanese w/ subtitled. Bio, mking-of spec. & promo trailer.

Another visually sensational animated film from the producers of the acclaimed "Akira." Major Motoko Kusanagi is a beautiful cyborg who works for Section 29, Japan's secret police force, in the year 2029. Motoko's supervisor, Aramaki, orders her to find Puppet Master, a sinister computer terrorist created by a rival organization. Helping her is fellow cyborg Bateau and the almost entirely human agent Togusa. Because their prey has the ability to hack into the minds of his enemies, the evil villain must be stopped as soon as possible. But as the tough cops close in on their target, Motoko realizes that she and Puppet Master seem to have a lot in common.

The makers of "Akira" present another milestone Japanimation epic in this futuristic odyssey about an elite half-cyborg female agent sent out to apprehend a cyber-genius data thief who is plundering the very contents of people's minds. Contains nudity and violence. The Collector's Edition includes a special 30-minute documentary on the making of the film.

Shown at the 1996 Berlin and South by Southwest Film Festival. Released theatrically in New York City March 29, 1996. Produced by Kodansha in association with Bandai Visual and Manga Entertainment. James Cameron, who directed such science fiction movies as "The Abyss" and both "Terminator" films, had this to say of "Ghost in the Shell": "Stunning... the first truly adult animation film to reach a level of literary and visual excellence... an important visionary work." Voices: Richard George (Bateau); Mimi Woods (Major Motoko Kusanagi); William Frederick (Aramaki); Abe Lasser (Puppet Master); Christopher Joyce (Togusa); Mike Sorich (Ishikawa); Ben Isaacson (Nakamura); Hank Smith (Minister); Steve Davis (Diplomat); and Phil Willimas (Willis). 5 stars Superb anime
For fans of anime, it doesn't get much better than this. "Ghost" is the one that started it all in America. Superb artwork, superb story. Can't wait till they make Ghost in the Shell 2 into a movie!

5 stars it found a voice... it found a body... what next?
Masterfully executed, superbly rendered. This is as close to top-flight anime as can be found. I do miss the Shirow Masamune touch, but admittedly, this may not have garnered the accolades it did if it was left too close to the manga. The video transfer is excellent. No discernable line noise, colour-banding issues, or panning stutter. The colour is vibrant; the contrast solid. The audio is also very good. My only issue was during a moment between Batou and Kusanagi on the boat just prior to sensing the "ghost". The english voice talent made the scene too confrontational instead of quiet introspection as the japanese script seemed to call for. I can't wait for the continuation.

A beautifully realized tale of civilization versus nature, PRINCESS MONONOKE is a true epic by Japan's master animator Hayao Miyazaki. While protecting his village from a rampaging boar-god, the warrior Ashitaka (Billy Crudup) is cursed with a rapidly spreading scar that threatens to end his life. Seeking a cure and a reason for the animal-god's attack, he journeys into the sacred depths of the Great Forest Spirit's realm. On the edge of this once serene forest, however, the Tatara clan have begun to destroy the surrounding land to produce iron. In retaliation, San (Claire Danes), the adopted daughter of the wolf-god Moro (Gillian Anderson), has begun raiding the Tatara fortress to stop their encroachment. Soon Ashitaka is caught in the middle and must stop the war between the humans and the forest dwellers before they destroy each other. Miyazaki, who was personally responsible for 80,000 of the film's 144,000 hand drawings, uses the story's lush feudal setting as a character unto itself, filling the screen with vast mountainous landscapes and gorgeous wooded glens that recall his early film, NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND. The film also features battle sequences that are reminiscent of the stunning live action warfare in Akira Kurosawa's RAN. The startlingly fluid movements of these mythological characters are detailed far beyond any other hand-animated production, easily making this one of the most spectacular animated films ever made. This adaptation of the classic sci-fi adventure tale by H.G. Wells, directed by Simon Wells (the great-grandson of the author), stars Guy Pearce as Alex Hartdegen, an absentminded New York professor preoccupied with what passes for technology at the turn of the 20th century. However, the one thing that can distract him from his calculations is his love for Emma (Sienna Guillory), his bride-to-be. When tragedy strikes and he loses Emma, Alex uses the time-travelling machine that he's built in secret to change the present by going into the past. When that fails to alter fate, he leaps forward in time, eventually landing 800,000 years in the future, an era where humanity has splintered into two races--the docile Eloi and the ferocious Morlocks. There Alex befriends two of the Eloi (Samantha and Omero Mumba) and attempts to help them resist almost certain death at the hands of the Morlocks. Like Pearce's character, this version of the novel is fascinated with technology and uses a daunting array of special effects. The fast-paced film was apparently not made without incident--Wells reportedly had a nervous breakdown during the shoot. Regardless of production difficulties, THE TIME MACHINE is an engaging spectacle that's anchored by Pearce and enhanced by the commanding appearance of Jeremy Irons. Guy Pearce, Jeremy Irons, Mark Addy, Omero Mumba, Orlando Jones, Samantha Mumba - Director: Simon Wells Scientist and inventor Alexander Hartdegen is determined to prove that time travel is possible. His determination is turned to desperation by a personal tragedy that now drives him to want to change the past. Testing his theories with a time machine of his own invention, Hartdegen is hurtled 800,000 years into the future, where he discovers that mankind has divided into the hunter and the hunted. Arriving in the year 802,701, Hartdegen learns that humankind has evolved into two distinct species: The Eloi, who live above ground, and the Morlocks, fearsome creatures

Viewed through our photographs, it would seem we have lived a joyous, leisurely existence. Sy Parrish (Robin Williams), who makes this observation, adversely leads a lonely life, operating a photo lab in a SavMart department store. He escapes his dreary reality through the family photos of Nancy Yorkin (Connie Nielsen) and her family. His admiration of the Yorkins becomes an obsession, as he fashions himself as Uncle Sy to little Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy's judgment becomes impaired by his unhealthy interest, causing him to lose his job of 11 years. As his final day approaches, Sy develops photographs revealing an indiscretion on the part of Mr. Yorkin (Michael Vartan). The unstable Sy now develops a disturbing, calculated plan to instill family values to the Yorkin clan. Much of ONE HOUR PHOTO takes place inside a department store similar to a Wal-Mart, bordered in an icy blue. This cold atmosphere creates a solitary framework for the disturbed photo developer Sy Parrish, played with a melancholic detachment by Williams, working here against type. Director Mark Romanek (STATIC) has created a thriller with little violence. Instead, it is permeated with an uncomfortable fear emanating from its damaged protagonist. Robin Williams stars in this thriller. Special DVD bonus features include writer/director/actor audio commentary, featurettes, interviews, more.

Known as the "Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele," Hawaiian native Jake Shimabukuro expands the instrument's traditional repertoire to include rock stylings that sound more like Eddie Van Halen than Don Ho. Shimabukuro continues to push the boundaries of the ukulele in his concert film MILLION MILES AWAY, which finds the virtuoso travelling from Hawaii to Tokyo to perform classical compositions with the Japanese Devil's Strings Quartet before returning home for a candlelit live performance of traditional Hawaiian ukulele music. Filmed on the 2004 RAINBOW tour, MILLION MILES AWAY also presents a selection of rehearsal takes, sound checks, and backstage footage for an intimate home-video-like atmosphere with artful black-and-white interludes.
