This 24-bit remastering of the tapes (taken originally from radio broadcasts) of Holiday's performance at Boston's famous Storyville Club (recorded in '51 and '53 respectively) vastly improves on the originals. The sound quality of the previous versions highlighted vocals and piano but left the rhythm section almost indiscernible. Such is not the case here, and the disc finds Holiday in supremely relaxed, well-weathered voice.
By the early '50s, Holiday's tone and timbre were already markedly different from her light, sensitive approach of the '40s. Deeper, richer, and more heavily stylized, her delivery here is gorgeously drowsy, an aesthetic heightened by the intimate setting and feel of the live nightclub to the point where both Lady and the combo border on the seductive consistency of molasses. Such classics as "Willow Weep For Me" and the marvelously expressive "I Love You, Porgy" are interspersed with the lovely "I Cover The Waterfront" and Holiday's self-penned "Billie's Blues." Particularly notable are the guest appearances by Stan Getz, who joins Holiday on "Lover Come Back To Me" and the unsettlingly confessional "Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do." This is an excellent improvement on an already delightful collection of performances.
Recorded live at The Storyville Club, Boston, Massachusetts in October 1951 and October 1953. Includes liner notes by Alun Morgan.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Personnel: Billie Holiday (vocals); Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Buster Harding, Carl Drinkard (piano); John Fields, Jimmy Woode (bass); Marquis Foster, Peter Littman (drums).

At Storyville songs
$9.85 (MP3 Available for Download) Digitally remastered by JVC using XRCD (Extended Resolution Compact Disc) technology.
In January 1958, producer Orrin Keepnews brought pianist Wynton Kelly and guitarist Kenny Burrell into the studio. Although he had for years been a highly regarded sideman with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young and Dinah Washington, the recording that resulted was only Kelly's second date as a leader. In 1951 Kelly had shown great promise, cutting his debut album at the age of twenty. Whisper Not showcases Kelly and Burrell in a trio setting with bassist Paul Chambers, and for one side adds drummer Philly Joe Jones. The tunes include Harold Arlen's "Ill Wind," Billie Holiday's "Don't Explain," and the title track, penned for the Gillespie band by Benny Golson. Unfortunately, Kelly is not given an opportunity to shine in a conventional piano trio setting with only ...

This is part of Blue Note Records "Rudy Van Gelder" Editions series.
Trying to describe Andrew Hill's POINT OF DEPARTURE in words is like trying to explain the pictures made by a kaleidoscope--it's impossible to be completely articulate about something so magically unique. Of course, with an assembled cast that includes Kenny Dorham, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, Richard Davis, and Tony Williams all in their creative prime, Hill would have been hard-pressed not ...
| | George Harrison All Things Must Pass CDs (1970) 30th Anniversary Edt; Remastered
At Storyville music CDs
$19.25 (MP3 Available for Download) Though George Harrison's solo albums for most of the 1970s and early '80s were uneven, often slapdash affairs, 1970's ALL THINGS MUST PASS is a brilliant piece of work. Produced by Phil Spector, whose expansive, majestic arrangements and sonic flourishes suit Harrison's songs perfectly, ALL THINGS MUST PASS eclipses everything the other Beatles recorded at the time (excepting John Lennon's PLASTIC ONO BAND). This sprawling double record gives the impression of Harrison being uncorked and pouring forth all of the songs and ideas edged out by Lennon and McCartney during the Beatles years.
The title and the melancholic black and white cover photo match the mood of the music, which brims with an armchair wisdom, and the weary, disillusioned air that permeated the early '70s in the counter-cultural wake. Yet ...

At Storyville MP3 Album
$9.79 (MP3 Available for Download) One of the delights for jazz fans going to New York City in 2004 was catching Bob Dorough during his regular Sunday brunch gig at Iridium. This intimate club is the perfect setting for an entertainer like Dorough, a superb bop stylist at the piano, who is also a charming singer and valuable composer to boot, all of which he has proved over a career that spanned around a half century at the time of these live recordings. With guitarist Steve Berger, bassist Steve Gilmore (on loan from Phil Woods while Dorough's regular was traveling overseas), and drummer Ed Ornowski, Dorough delves into standards, new material, and his own works (both old and new) with equal enthusiasm. While the pianist's originals are the ...
