Heavy metal concept albums are nothing new; however, this macabre opus ranks among the most bizarre ever recorded. More of an audio play than a music album, a Rod Serling-like narrator takes listeners through a disturbingly graphic story depicting genetically mutated maggots breeding exponentially until mankind is exterminated. Not for the squeamish; explicit dialogue and detailed descriptions of characters and their horrible deaths by the disgusting creatures are told with fantastic horror. Providing interlude are six apocalyptic Plasmatics songs embellishing the plot and displaying Wendy O. Williams' distinctive machine-gun caterwauling. "You're a Zombie," "The Day of the Humans Gone," "Brain Dead," and "Finale" are surprisingly decent '80s punk metal anthems with all the trimmings: chanted vocals, pounding militia-marching drums, and crunching guitar work. Once tossed off as gory camp, realized environmental changes and threats of biological terrorism made this prophetic release particularly unnerving. ~ Craig Curtice

| | Wendy O Williams Wow CD (1984)
Maggots: The Record (Ninth Anniversary Album)
$12.39 Wendy O. Williams was formerlly the singer of the group The Plasmatics.
Wendy O. Williams wasted no time staking out a solo career following the Plasmatics' 1983 breakup. She found a patron in Kiss' tongue-wagging bassist Gene Simmons, who'd taken her old band on tour as a support act. The result led to Simmons' first production work outside of Kiss (while he credited his bass playing as Reginald Van Helsing, a pseudonym that didn't fool astute fans). Simmons felt that Williams could succeed on her own terms, with better material and production. Simmons was half-right: his impressive production work stacks saber-toothed guitars on lush keyboards without burying Williams' two-fisted attitude. A solid supporting cast of former Plasmatics guitarist Wes Beech and drummer T.C. Tolliver ...
| | Wendy O Williams Kommander Of Kaos CD (1986)
Maggots: The Record (Ninth Anniversary Album)
$12.39 Although best known as the death-defying leader of the Plasmatics, Wendy O. Williams issued several albums on her own during the 1980s. And while her earlier band was a certified punk outfit, by this stage of her career, Williams was zeroing in on the heavy metal audience -- Gene Simmons had produced an earlier album, while the singer was spotted hosting a heavy metal video show on the ...
| | Plasmatics New Hope For The Wretched/Metal Priestess CD (2001)
Maggots: The Record (Ninth Anniversary Album)
$12.39 This two-fer reissue from New York shock merchants the Plasmatics makes for a somewhat odd pairing, with the band's most punk-friendly album, 1980's New Hope for the Wretched, matched up with the 1981 EP Metal Priestess, where the band made its first clear bid for acceptance by the world's heavy metal kids. Truth be told, the shift isn't as disorienting as some might expect; a listen to New Hope makes it clear guitarists Richie Stotts and Wes Beech already had at least one toe dipped in the hard rock pool from the very beginning, though their more metallic inclinations were reigned in by the forward velocity of songs like "Tight Black Pants," "Butcher Baby," and "Monkey Suit," as well as the noisy experimentalism of their cover of Bobby Darin's "Dream Lover." On Metal Priestess, however, the band embraced a more arena-friendly sound, and seem quite comfortable with the creative shift; while "Doom Song" and "Lunacy" are slower ...
| | Plasmatics Put Your Love In Me: Love Songs For The Apocalypse CD (2002)
Maggots: The Record (Ninth Anniversary Album)
$12.39 Depending on who you talk to, the Plasmatics were either one of rock's most magnetic and radical bands or a pack of hacks with a sackful of stage gimmicks. Certainly, all these years after the demise of lightning-rod frontwoman Wendy O. Williams, and hence the band, the Plasmatics still generate plenty of vehement debate -- a clash of intense adulation and feverish contempt -- especially on the Internet. At the very least, then, one must concede the status of phenomenon to these theatrical New York quasi-punks. ...
