(10 Customer Reviews)
Billy Cobham's second date as a leader was one of his better sessions. Four songs (all originals by the leader/drummer) comprise "Spanish Moss -- A Sound Portrait," and, in addition, Cobham contributed three other pieces. The selections team him with guitarist John Abercrombie, both of the Brecker Brothers, trombonist Garnett Brown, keyboardist George Duke, bassist John Williams, and Latin percussionist Lee Pastora. In general, the melodies and the vamps are reasonably memorable. Cobham also takes an unaccompanied drum solo on "Storm." Worth searching for by fusion collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York.
Personnel includes: Billy Cobham (drums, percussion); Michael Brecker (reeds); Randy Brecker (trumpet); Garnett Brown (trombone); George Duke (keyboards); John Abercrombie (guitar); John Williams (bass).
Billy Cobham Crosswinds Songs Crosswinds Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Tasty and spacy. If I remember correctly, this was a quadraphonic recording in its vinyl days. The only hint of this is to imagine the phased-drum barrage of 'the storm' panning around the room, and the later track 'HEATHER'. On this track the synth lines and percussion gently hang in space, with the sax player entering at the back left corner of the soundstage. As his solo developes, it moves forward in the sound picture, and takes up centre stage. In quad, this was heavenly. I havent tried it in prologic2 yet, but the effect may still be apparent. Such a good album. Submitted by David Martin (Mt Martha, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 6 of 6 found this helpful.

classic cobham and brecker brothers This is a must for the Brecker Brothers earlier in their careers, not to mention incredible drumming which sets standards by Billy Cobham. Submitted by robdeg57 (DeLand,Fl.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Billy's Best I first witnessed Billy's chops back in the 70's when I saw him live with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This Cd along with his Spectrum Cd is probably his best. I love the way he composed these tunes almost like an idea that flows into a moving picture. You cannot go wrong with this one. Esprcially if you like Jazz and Fussion. A Hot Mix of Smooth Jazz & Fusion As leader, producer, and composer, Billy
Cobham is surrounded by top notch sidemen that include the Brecker Brothers, John Abercrombie, Garnett Brown and George Duke.
Cobham's drumming is powerful, yet sensitve in his post-Mahavishnu Orchestra career as a leader. "Crosswinds" is one of many discs that captures the electricity of the fusion movement during the early 70s that Miles Davis helped to foster. Crosswinds songs
$8.85 Of all the talented young trumpeters to emerge in the late 1950s, few were gifted with the astonishing technical aptitude of Indianapolis native Freddie Hubbard. Whereas friend, contemporary and erstwhile rival Lee Morgan seemed to reflect the braggadocio of Dizzy Gillespie, Hubbard was more in tune with the supple airborne phrasing of Clifford Brown, which is why drummer Art Blakey brought Hubbard into the Jazz Messengers to supersede Morgan--figuring he would prove a less dominating foil for the emerging talents of tenor saxophonist and musical director, Wayne Shorter.
Not that Hubbard lacked fire. It's just that his harmonic sensibility and chops were so refined, he was able to approximate the fluidity of a saxophonist--which is why the young virtuoso got the nod for special projects by Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. The latter's shadow looms prominently over the proceedings on READY FOR FREDDIE, Hubbard's fourth and most compelling date as a leader: Wayne Shorter is still discovering his own way through Coltrane-ish phrases and harmonic devices, Bernard McKinney's euphonium provides a stark contrasting timbre, while the rhythm section from OLE COLTRANE confers a supple, shifting groove to the proceedings.
Hubbard distinguishes himself both as improviser and composer. The jagged harmonic contrasts that announce "Arietis" segue into a bright groove, as the trumpeter unwinds complex, unhurried lines against pianist McCoy Tyner's varied comp and the big loose beat of Art Davis and Elvin Jones. On "Weaver Of Dreams," Hubbard displays a lithe, rounded attack, making confident musical use of trills and double-time syncopations over ...

Crosswinds CD music
$9.85 Hailing from the Washington, D.C., area, pianist/composer William Knowles and bassist/lyricist Mark Saltman collaborate with vocalist Lori Williams to present ten original jazz songs. As referenced by the title, these selections are melodic to a certain degree, but not saturated or sugary. Counterpoint between voice and instruments is kept to a minimum and the songs are maintained in a similar introspective mood, mostly midtempo with no torch songs or ballads. A Latin tinge is used here and there, while saxophonist Charles Langford chimes in and solos regularly. There's a sense of deliberateness to this music; little is left to chance or spontaneity. It's ...
