The once-and-future E Street Band honcho was probably better known for his role on HBO's THE SOPRANOS than for his music when this album was released at the end of 1999, but that's a rank injustice. In fact, BORN AGAIN SAVAGE is a tour de force, a great, brutal piece of guitar rock that yokes Steve Van Zant's political passions to songs that are canny tributes to (as he writes in the liner notes) the rock pioneers that kept him alive as a kid.
Backed by the killer rhythm section of Jason Bonham and U2's Adam Clayton (Van Zant plays all the multi-tracked guitars), he serves up a set that more than lives up to his influences. The title track is a politicized version of the Yardbirds' "Little Games," while "The Camouflage of Righteousness" is an angrier version of the Who's "We're Not Gonna Take It." "Salvation" is an open-G tuned rocker that recalls countless Stones songs, andàwell you get the idea. Yes, the album is by derivative by definition, but its coiled-spring passion and clear-eyed wisdom nevertheless speak volumes in ways that more superficially au courant product doesn't.
(drums); Steve Jordan, Jean Beauvoir, Ben Newberry, Frank Newberry (background vocals).

Born Again Savage album
$10.39 This was the 1987 Grammy winner for best engineered non-classical recording.
More meticulously crafted than its predecessor ARC OF A DIVER, and more musically adventurous than its follow-up ROLL WITH IT, BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE represents the pinnacle of Steve Winwood's '80s pop output. High production values, interlocking percussion lines, R&B backing vocals, horns, synthesizers and ideas borrowed from various world musics enhance and update Winwood's proclivity for blues, R&B, and rock. His distinctive, blue-eyed soul vocals are, naturally, at the front of the mix as well.
The runaway Number One single, "Higher Love," with its syncopated ...

| | Devil In A Woodpile In Your Lonesome Town CD (2005)
Born Again Savage music CDs
$12.39 There's a photo inside Devil in a Woodpile's In Your Lonesome Town, taken from the point of view of a light fixture far above. It depicts a makeshift recording studio set up on the tile floor and Oriental rug below. An acoustic bass lies on its side near a big piano; washboards, jugs, and a lone kick drum are spread across the far side of the rug. Microphone cords snake here and there, and the surfaces of two National steel-bodied guitars gleam in the camera's flash. The shot captures the casual hominess of Devil in a Woodpile's music, the music that takes a toothy-grin approach to blues, bluegrass, hot jazz, and hillbilly sounds, throwing them all into a big hat and using the result to buy beers for the room. (That room is usually a rollicking Chicago tavern called the Hideout, where Woodpile has a regular and unamplified Tuesday night gig.) Bandleader Rick "Cookin'" Sherry is his usual self here, his vocals somewhere between hoedown rap and impromptu Saturday night singer. He plays that washboard, jug, and kick drum throughout Lonesome Town, as well as clarinet (to great effect on a ...
