Speed of Life is the first studio album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in five years and celebrates the group's 43rd anniversary with three of its original members still intact (and no, the number 43 was not a typo). It also finds them reduced once more to a quartet with the departure of multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Ibbotson. That said, the band has lost none of its immediacy, power, or expert presentation of both original material and songs from some of Nashville's finest. Blowing the Fuse is a killer series of compilation CDs issued by Germany's premier archivist label, Bear Family. Subtitled "R&B Classics That Rocked the Jukebox," each volume is compiled by year. 1947 was a boom year for jukeboxes across the United States. This volume, like most of the others, contains 28 affirmed classics of the early postwar years. Louis Jordan was at the height of his powers in '47 and his "Let the Good Times Roll" opens the set and is followed by Albert Ammons' "Swamp River Boogie," a burning boogie-woogie piano jumper. Sequencing is key in a collection like this, and the folks at Bear Family understand this implicitly. Here, Jack McVea's "Open the Door Richard" is just ahead of Amos Milburn's "Down the Road Apiece," which is followed by Savannah Churchill's "I Want to Be Loved Only by You." Elsewhere the Ravens, the Five Blazes, Julia Lee and Walter Brown make appearances, as do Joe Turner, Hadda Brooks and Roy Milton. Koch's 2005 collection Columbia Hits is the first time Billy Walker's singles from the late '50s and first half the '60s have appeared on an American CD. Previously, this material was collected on Bear Family's typically exhaustive 1993 six-disc set Cross the Brazos at Waco, and listening to Koch's generous 20-track collection, it's easy to hear why Walker was given the Bear Family treatment. Walker was a countrypolitan crooner halfway between Jim Reeves and Ray Price, possessing a sweet high tenor voice that was so smooth, he made everything he sang seem easy. Perhaps a touch too easy -- Walker seems to glide through the ballads and skip through the gently rolling up-tempo numbers without ever leaving a strong impression. He was a professional through and through, working within Nashville's studio system without stamping his recordings with a strong personal identity. That resulted in quite a few hits, but not too many big ones -- only his 1962 breakthrough "Charlie's Shoes" topped the charts, with the Marty Robbins-styled cowboy tune "Cross the Brazos at Waco" reaching number two two years later.
