While many of their Constellation labelmates concerned themselves more with ambience, Do Make Say Think was a bit more traditional, but only a bit. In fact, the band owes as much to dub and early Kraftwerk as it does to psychedelic space rock. On each of the album's (mostly) lengthy tracks, the band takes its time getting from A to B. Yawnsville, if you're looking for a rock album, but a great way to mellow out if you're in no particular hurry. As with other Constellation releases, the packaging is of special interest, with a cutout in the front of the sleeve and multiple cards you can insert, for a different album each time. ~ Sean Carruthers

Do Make Say Think
$14.29 What's refreshing about Goodbye Enemy Airship the Landlord Is Dead is its earnestness and straightforward approach. The band implements some interesting mixing techniques, including panning electronic loops and rich reverb, which invite the "post-rock" critiques, but also enhance their sound. The guitars are deft, and most of the album relies on minor droning themes. "When Day Chokes Night," the first track, opens with a lone guitar riff that builds to a cathartic demise, but this ...

| | Do Make Say Think Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn CD (2003)
Do Make Say Think
$12.89 Montreal's Godspeed You Black Emperor! may get most of the press south of the 49th parallel, but their labelmates Do Make Say Think are more than Toronto's answer to the Quebecois collective; over the course of four albums, their own brand of instrumental post-rock has grown in scope and complexity to a point that 2003's Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn is as good as or better than anything the more famous band has released. Although the nine lengthy tracks all start similarly to Godspeed's epic slowcore, with single guitar, percussion or horn lines that float unmoored for seconds or even minutes before other instruments slowly coalesce around them. But where Godspeed's songs all tend to follow the same ...
| | Scarface World Is Yours CD (1993)
Do Make Say Think
$11.69 Scarface once again quickly follows a Geto Boys album, Till Death Do Us Part, with a solo release, The World Is Yours, just as he'd done two years earlier with his brilliant solo debut, Mr. Scarface Is Back. The circumstances are otherwise quite different, though. Scarface had been on a roll in 1991: fresh off the breakthrough success of "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" and its similarly well-received Geto Boys album, We Can't Be Stopped, he unveiled a cinematic, somewhat conceptual solo debut that made him a bona fide national superstar. Furthermore, much changed within the rap world between 1991-1993, specifically the end of free-for-all sampling and the widespread proliferation of gangsta rap. Scarface thus delivers a follow-up that's a huge leap forward from his debut, both in terms of production and rhetoric. He works here mostly with producer N.O. Joe, who ...
| | Fred Frith Gravity CD (1980)
Do Make Say Think
$15.29 GRAVITY is arguably the finest offering from Fred Frith, a stylistically uncategorizable guitarist-extraordinaire. As usual, Frith strives to obliterate musical distinctions, and GRAVITY is an explosion of pan-genre creativity. Frith throws herky-jerky dance structures, non-Western folk melodies, avant-garde schematics, tribal rhythms, and odd instrumentation ...
| | Very Best Of Cat Stevens CD (2000)
Do Make Say Think
$33.75 The greatest hits collection of renowned folk rocker Cat Stevens includes 31 of his catchy and addictive tracks, such as "Father & Son" and "Wild World."
Before converting to Islam in 1978, the British-born Cat Stevens blazed the trail for the sensitive singer-songwriter movement that got its start in the earlier part of the decade. Containing both early and late representations of Stevens' impressive canon, VERY BEST OF surpasses the wildly popular GREATEST HITS collection that preceded it.
Starting with the more lushly orchestrated material of the late 60s ("Matthew & Son," "The First Cut Is The Deepest" which Rod Stewart turned into a mid-70s hit), this collection captures Stevens' transformation into an introspective artisan who succeeded with a unique brand of folk-pop. Moving from a rumored ode to actress Patti D'Arbanville ("Lady D'Arbanville" featuring flutist Peter Gabriel), Stevens quickly moved into weightier matters of introspection and spirituality ranging from the global ("Wild World," "Peace Train") to the familial ("Father And Son").
In addition to writing about the plight of the younger set ("Where Do The Children Play?") and looking to religious hymns for inspiration ("Morning ...
