Trip Hop. Tracks on this album range from 'Smokey Lounge' and 'Jazzy Upbeat' to 'Dark Eastern tinged' flavors. Combination of organic atmospheres, instrumentation and sharp production make for a cool and instantly likeable record.
It was difficult to separate Aromabar's debut from the glum trip-hop work of Thievery Corporation and Andrea Parker, except that it appeared to have a deeper understanding of pop structure. Roland Hackl, DJ Scott, and Karin Steger put together the clever "Where's Your Moon" and the Italian Cass & Slide big beat of "Africa For Eu" without a needless wandering of styles and fastened the rest to an understated house texture. While the idea that down-tempo didn't have to constantly leap through genres to keep one's interest was admirable enough, and it did leave for a series of more unmemorable tracks such as the poorly executed "Telephone," "Green Running," "Little Brother," and "Winter Pageant." ~ Dean Carlson
Personnel includes: Ningee, Ingrid Hofer (vocals).

| | Hybrid Device CD (2001)
1! CD music
$8.15 Instinct's sister label has proved itself equipped with a keen eye for A&R, with a plethora of impressive downtempo signings since its inception. The Los Angeles-based duo Hybrid Device, aka Will Wood and Puneet Grewa, slips right in with contemporaries Droid and Shinju Gumi, setting effects-filled Floyd-like guitar meanderings adrift on vast lakes of aching liquid sound. Although perhaps a little ...

| | Ivy Guestroom CD (2002)
1! songs
$12.95 Ivy made an interesting move when they released the all-covers album Guestroom in fall 2002. It's an eclectic collection of songs -- an intriguing but differing mix of genre and time. But Ivy makes things work brilliantly; smart songwriting with ever-changing moods has always marked Ivy's artsy, melodic measure. So basically, Guestroom is an added bonus for new and old fans alike. Most anyone will appreciate Dominique Durand's wispy, warm vocals and the intricate musicianship of Adam Schlesinger and Andy Chase. Cult classics such as the Cure's "Let's Go to Bed" and House of Love's "I Don't Know Why I Love You" are divine picks from Ivy, particularly the latter track. Simple acoustics and lite synth beats dice up the songs' original pop pounce for a dark, muted presence. "Say Goodbye," which is a Papas Fritas favorite among fans, rolls down new wave memory lane; however, the hipness of the Go-Betweens' "Streets of Your Town" brilliantly captures Ivy's musical heart. Guestroom may highlight some of the band's cherished cuts from the decadent days of the 1980s, but there are some hidden treasures. Durand's enchanting singing style on the Ronettes' chart hit "Be My Baby" is tailored for a nearly eerie, lullaby sweep. The Parisian-born Durand gives ...

| | Noisia Fabriclive.40 CD (2008) Import
1! songs
$34.89 Genre designations are pretty much useless in the world of jungle and drum'n'bass these days, when every subcategory seems to splinter into a dozen new ones within weeks of its first emergence in a British or European club. The corner of the market staked out by Noisia (a Dutch trio consisting of Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen, and Thijs de Vlieger) is a sort of jump-up/glitchcore/hardstep/jungle hybrid, with plenty of doom-laden samples, angry-robot basslines, and techy breakbeats dripping off the edges. Noisia's contribution to the Fabriclive series is a generous set of 29 tracks, most of them original singles previously issued on the band's own Vision and Division labels, others taken from the catalogs of Ninja Tune, Virus, and other well-respected imprints and featuring such cutting-edge artists as Spor (whose creepily brilliant "Claret's March" is one of the strangest and most fascinating tracks on the collection) and Misanthrop (whose "Viperfish" comes on with a thrillingly frantic intensity). Even Moby makes an ...
| | D-Block Prepare For Glory CD (2008)
1! album
$14.15 A long-awaited (and oft-pushed-back) mixtape featuring the extended D-Block family, but with a hearty offering of new rhymes by the three core members (The LOX: Sheek Louch, Styles P, Jadakiss), 2009's PREPARE FOR GLORY is essentially a showcase for in-house super-producer Poobs. While other members of the sprawling collective drop in to offer the occasional spare beat, ...
