$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled ...

| | Saul Zonana 42 Days CD (2005)
Through The Window CD music
$10.15 Saul Zonana's fourth album features guest production and playing by Malcolm Burn (Lisa Germano, etc.) and Adrian Belew on several songs, but it's not fundamentally that different from his three earlier releases. (For example, the brief found-sound interludes that have linked songs since his solo debut are still present and accounted for.) Zonana's brand of inoffensive power pop shows all of the craft the multi-instrumentalist has refined over his previous career as a songwriter for the likes of Paula Cole and Taylor Dayne; however, while the songs are never less than pleasant, they're also not particularly memorable. Zonana's melodic sense is faultless, but even catchy tunes like the opening "Silver Jacket" and the Matthew Sweet-like "Every Now and Then" are hampered by their boring arrangements and Zonana's clichéd lyrics. There's no one thing that's fundamentally wrong with 42 Days, but the songs and their performances rarely rise above the level of competent mediocrity. ~ Stewart Mason
One of the most gratifying experiences any music lover can have is stumbling across an artist who has it all: brains, heart, chops, indelible melodies, songs that actually say something and an album that hangs together as a complete thought. Which brings us writer/artist/multi-instrumentalist Saul Zonana and his new album, 42 Days (to be released April 19 on the independent label, 20/20 Music with distribution through Redeye). The album, Zonana's fourth solo CD, was co-produced by someone whose name will ring a bell: the brilliant guitarist Adrian Belew of King Crimson fame, a musicians' musician who has worked with such pantheon figures as Frank Zappa, David Bowie and Paul Simon. Working with Adrian was an amazing experience, Zonana says. But how did this talented artist get a living legend to produce? Simple: Zonana got a package containing Waves ( his last cd ) and some rough demos of the new material to Belew, who was so taken with Saul's music that he immediately signed on. Along with sharing production duties, Belew added his distinctive lead guitar work to three songs, including the album's dramatic centerpiece, the unforgettable Hey Now. On this track, Zonana's spoken vignettes about a 12-year-old he spotted in a Manhattan ...
