Valedictory Songs is no farewell. It marks a graduation of sorts for the Bevis Frond from the psychedelic bubbling and gurgling guitar experimentation of previous albums to crunchy psych-pop with an emphasis on straight-up songwriting. In addition to the band's characteristic Hendrix-ian fanfare ("Can't Feel It" and "Sugar Voids"), Valedictory Songs presents a wealth of styles for a seriously mind-altering trip. Nick Saloman's keyboards and vocals on "By the Waters Edge" along with Ade Shaw's thick bass groove give the song a bluesy, garage vibe. There are feel-good Beatles melodies here too ("Early Riser" and the sitar jam "Artillery Row"), Nick Drake-esque folk-rock (the pretty melancholy of "High on a Downer"), and new wavy power punk ("We Are the Dead"). These eclectic tunes flow together to make one of the most satisfying psychedelic albums you're apt to find. The culmination is "Portobello Man," a story of future archeologists' discovery of "the bones of Portobello Man." This is a definite contender for the best under-heard song of 2000. To nostalgic strumming and piano, Saloman asks, "But then isn't freedom part of everybody's plan?" Put on some big, vintage headphones and throw Valedictory Songs on the stereo. You'll have your answer and your freedom. ~ Charles Spano

Alternative Press (4/01, p.66) - 4 out of 5 - "...This is a rather good album. Nick Salomon has a fine...voice; his band plunder the space-rock past for one of the most muscular rhythm sections around, and lyrically he's got a sharp eye for cynical nostalgia..." Magnet (1-2/01, p.77) - "...Tightly wound compositions of both hard-rock and psych/folk ilks while retaining some of the folk signature tab-on-tongue frissons..." Mojo (Publisher) (7/01, p.96) - "...Effectively gathers together all of Saloman's strengths but gives them a quick polish for the non-believers..." Valedictory Songs songs
$12.59 Anyone who has seen Kodo perform in concert will recall their spectacular onstage presence, massive taiko drums, and a singularly Japanese aesthetic that draws upon centuries of tradition. More than merely a bunch of guys with drums (at last count, they had four women members), Kodo is a performing arts collective that has helped reinvigorate the cultural forms of Sado Island, where they are based.
On MONDO HEAD, the troupe gets together with half the crew from the classic worldbeat ...
| | Mike Pope Lay Of The Land CD (2002)
Valedictory Songs album
$13.55 Assuming the world doesn't come to an end anytime soon, it's a fairly safe bet that in time, every successful jazz sideman will be offered a deal from a major or indie label to make an attempt at a solo career. Most likely, every one of these sidemen will take advantage of the bigger names they work with to help market their own music. But why not? Mike Pope had been one of the Big Apple's key groove cats over the past decade, and his resumé had been helped along by none other than Randy Brecker and Mike Stern -- who, along with Michael Brecker, fellow first bassman John Patitucci, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, help bring Pope's debut to powerful improvisational levels. Pope clearly loves the interplay, jumping out of the box with the fast and funky "The First Order of Business," a spotlight for Randy Brecker and Watts. There's emotional balance provided by other Pope originals like the gently romantic "Essence" and the one standard in the bunch, "The Way You Look Tonight," which is given an abstract and expansive treatment. And even in the post-9/11 world of American tributes, you can't say you've heard many top jazz players do a thoughtful version of "The Star Spangled Banner," can you? ~ Jonathan Widran
Mike Pope is a real renaissance man. He is a musician of broad scope and tremendous talent. His virtuosity on electric and acoustic bass is rare even by today's standards. His harmonic sophistication is matched only by his ability to improvise on a very high level with great consistency. To top it off, he's no slouch on the piano either(it's in the family genes). In addition I'd also like to note that Mr. Pope is an inventor as well(designs and builds pre-amps for basses etc.). All this plus he can take your car apart and rebuild it for you. Is there anything Mike Pope can't do???? John Patitucci 2/1/02-CD Liner Notes- If you're a fan of the bass and this CD is your first encounter with Michael Pope, you're in for a pleasant surprise. The Lay of the Land is a wonderful session, full of the leader's great writing and playing, with brilliant essays along the way by the members of this all-star line-up. Given the fact that this recording makes such a mature artist statement, the only surprise should be ...

Valedictory Songs CD music
$14.65 This is the first ever CD reissue of his first two albums for the Ko Ko label, dating from 1972. Between them they contain all of his biggest hits for Ko Ko, as well as a number of tracks that only ever appeared originally on the albums. Many people know
Luther Ingram started recording in the mid-'60s, yet it wasn't until 1972 that he released an LP. This CD combines his first two albums (both issued in 1972) onto one disc, with the addition of thorough historical liner notes. The earlier of the pair, I've Been Here All the ...
