The innovative Chicago collective Isotope 217 delve deeper into the obscure with this project. This EP is essentially a collection of taped live performances that have been remixed by Casey Rice (Designer) and Commander Mindfuck. Musically, Isotope 217 attempt to push the envelope of improvised jazz, and the decision to offer their music to be further tweaked by DJ's displays a creative edge not found in other contemporary jazz groups. It is this innovative spirit that sets Isotope 217 apart from mainstream acts, and gives their music a unique sound. This album provides glimpses of the different sides of Isotope. Sometimes reckless and other times carefully monitored, the bridges between these gaps are taken away, providing a pastiche of their music. This album is markedly different than The Unstable Molecule, the group's debut album: the songs are longer and less structured, at times sounding like a Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis. Isotope 217 also dispense with much of the subdued tones found on Unstable, opting for a more biting, aggressive sound. Band leader Rob Mazurek's trumpet is a predominant force as is the guitar playing of Jeff Parker. The Commander Mindfuck mix jumps around quite a bit, whereas Designer's is more consistent. To understand this album completely, one needs the background of the first Isotope 217 album and Mazurek's work in the Chicago Underground Duo. This is not the best introduction to Isotope 217, but it displays the vision of its leader Mazurek as a jazz revolutionary. ~ Marc Gilman

$13.39 With 1999's Cathode, Otomo Yoshihide presents a mix of his experimental material. On the opening and closing tracks, "Modulation #2" and "Modulation #1" respectively, he makes full use of sine waves alongside the sounds of the sho, a traditional Japanese instrument. ...
| | David Murray We Is: Live At The Bop Shop CD (2004)
Commander Mindfuck CD music
$12.59 Although at first glance a full-length tenor-sax/drums duet set might lack variety, this matchup between David Murray and Kahil El'Zabar is on another level. For one thing, El'Zabar plays percussion as much as drums. In addition, neither musician is afraid to use space and silence, and there is no need to play at top volume and intensity all of the time. They are able to form coherent statements without the need for a full rhythm section, and they communicate together very well. The opener "Groove Allure" is relatively peaceful and lyrical while "We Is" is more violent and passionate. "Blues Affirmation" is particularly intriguing, with Murray preaching soulfully on tenor over El'Zabar's thumb piano and affirmative chanting/singing. Murray switches to bass clarinet ...

Commander Mindfuck CD music
$13.29 Commissioned for the 2007 Vision Festival in New York City, DOUBLE SUNRISE OVER NEPTUNE is arguably one of the finest achievements in William Parker's already remarkable discography. With a 16-piece orchestra that features not only strings, horns, and woodwinds, but oud, electric guitar, and vocals, Parker devises a sonic world that's stunningly textured, surprising, and beautiful. There is a heavy world-music influence mixing with more avant garde tendencies, a fusion ...
| | Thurman Green Dance Of The Night Creatures CD (1999)
Commander Mindfuck music CDs
$14.59 Throughout his life, Thurman Green was thought of as a bebop-oriented trombonist. He did spend time playing in Los Angeles with swinging big bands (including the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra) but he was also an occasional member of the Horace Tapscott Quintet (one of many groups headed by the late pianist that no one bothered to record) and was open-eared enough to play quite credibly in free settings now and then. In 1962, Green and baritonist Hamiet Bluiett were jamming buddies at the Navy School of Music in Washington D.C. They soon went their separate ways but hoped to team up again some day. Thirty-two years later, in December 1994, Bluiett (who had been producing quite a few worthy records for the Mapleshade label) was able to give his old friend his first opportunity to lead his own record date. It is a shame that it took over four years for the music to finally come out because, in 1997, Green suddenly passed away at age 57. Bluiett (who doubles here on contrabass clarinet) plays a supportive role behind the trombonist, who is also joined by pianist John Hicks, either Walter Booker or Steve Novosel on bass, and drummer Steve Williams. Some of the music (including a version of "Struttin' with Some Barbecue," which does not include Bluiett) is typically straight-ahead. But listeners will also be surprised to hear that a few of Green's originals (particularly "Cross Currents") include a lot of adventurous interplay between the two horns. Green ...
| | Thelonious Monk And The Jazz Giants CD (1992)
Commander Mindfuck songs
$13.95 Digitally remastered by Ed Michel (1986, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Unique among Monk samplers insofar as it skirts the expected, tired selections (such as "Round Midnight" and "Straight, No Chaser") in favor of lesser known, though equally great numbers, THELONIOUS MONK AND THE JAZZ GIANTS is a wonderful collection. The songs, with one exception, are all originals; so the focus of the disc is not only Monk's revolutionary approach to the keyboard (with its spare and idiosyncratic poetry), but his genius as a composer.
Oft-overlooked gems like "Nutty," "I Mean You," and "Played Twice" are brought to the fore along with more familiar tunes like the deliberate, spilling ensemble piece "Crepuscule With Nellie" and the infectious "In Walked Bud." The "jazz giants" of the title include everyone from Sonny Rollins to John Coltrane to Gerry Mulligan (who has a lovely baritone sax solo on "I Mean You"). The raucous ten-piece big band arrangement of "Little Rootie Tootie" (written for Monk's son), with its fat swing and full-blown dynamics, adds a nice flavor to the stew. Varied, lengthy (over 60 minutes), delightful, and perhaps most importantly, atypical, this release distinguishes itself as a cut above the average Monk compilation.
Recorded between December 7, 1956 and April 29, 1960. Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Gigi Gryce, Phil Woods (alto saxophone); Coleman Hawkins, Harold Land, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); Gerry Mulligan, Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); ...
