(1 Customer Review)
Much like his previous release on Pacific Moon Records, River, Rainbow is a delicate, emotive collection of songs which combine traditional Chinese instrumentation with ambient instrumentation. Fang plays the niko, a stringed instrument which mimics the sound of the human voice, and the clarity of that sound lends much to the spiritual tone of this album. Evoking the open spaces and peaceful beauty of the wilderness in springtime, Fang creates a series of melodies where the silence between the sounds is as important as the notes themselves. A gentle and soothing recording, Rainbow will delight fans of new age and Asian music alike. ~ Stacia Proefrock

| | Missa Johnouchi Road To Oasis CD (2002)
Rainbow CD music
$14.65 Pianist and keyboard player Missa Johnouchi is certainly accomplished enough as a player and arranger, and her idea of blending Western new age melodies and Chinese instrumentation from the Li-Hua Ensemble makes for an exotic mix. The problem, if it really is one, is that the melodies she composes are a little too pretty and sweet. You bite into one and it's all air, without any substance or depth. However, while that might not be too satisfying in the long-term, it does mean that Road to Oasis makes good background music. The Eastern instruments do catch the ear -- although they, too, play in a very Western style -- with the unmistakable pipu and erhu. But while there are touches of Eastern promise, the record never delivers on its possibilities. The spiritual connection between new age and the East is obvious, but really never gets explored before a few mild spices (and the incense sticks in the jewel box). It's a shame, because the quality of playing is there, with both "The Last Caravan" and "Moon Over the Border" being standouts of touch. Of course, the gossamer quality of the touch ends up being too lightweight, as stated. But for your next dinner party, it could be the perfect soundtrack. ~ Chris Nickson

This compilation is not strictly a best-of collection. Rather, 12 x 12 gathers 12 original 12" versions of Thomas Dolby's best material. This new U.K. series includes extended versions of "Europa & the Pirate Twins," "One of Our Submarines," and "She Blinded Me With Science" (of course). Other noteworthy tracks include the "Heavy Brother Sub Version" of "Hyperactive" and "Hot Sauce." Truly ...

Rainbow album
$19.35 Eclectic, Energetic and Spectacular.Described by the CBC as “the hottest guitar ensemble in Canada”, the MG3 has quickly established itself as a force of rejuvenation and cross-pollenization between various musical forms. Its 2002 concert, entitled “The heat of the Day,” and performed in Montreal, was nominated for Concert of the Year (Jazz and World Music) at the prestigious Prix Opus 2002, celebrating musical excellence in Quebec. Rainbow CD music
$20.29 About Kruno...Krunoslav “Kruno” Spisic has exploded onto the scene with his exciting blend of Gypsy Jazz and Balkan fusion that ex¬hilarates audiences. Recent highlights include a standing ovation at New York’s famous Birdland Djangofest, tour en¬gagements with the world famous Dorado Schmitt, and his debut album “Kruno Gypsy Jazz Guitar” under Gypsy Jazz Distributing. His first instrument was of Eastern European decent called the Tambura, a four tone mandolin from modern day Croa¬tia. Growing up amongst ethnic Slavs and Roma, Kruno was exposed to many forms of art and music from the Balkans and its Gypsies. It was not until studying guitar at University that Kruno was introduced to Django-style guitar and began a passionate study of the Gypsy Jazz genre. Kruno started playing the To¬ronto jazz circuit where he gained an extensive repertoire and a more mature understanding of the gypsy jazz idiom. In January of 2002, Kruno moved to the US and formed the Kruno Spisic Gypsy Jazz Ensemble. He has joined forces with rhythm guitar player and internationally recognized composer, Vjekoslav Dimter, bassist Scott Churchman, Cim¬balom virtuoso Alex Fedoriouk and charismatic accordion¬ist, Vlado Mollov to spread this exciting music throughout the world. Kruno and company create a new branch of gyp¬sy jazz by fusing folk traditions with Django swing. This new merging of sounds enthralls audiences with its sweet melo¬dies and hot Gypsy jazz. Kruno has performed at folk festivals and jazz clubs all over the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan, bringing this unique blend of swing and ...
