This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock songwriters in the business. Not only did Thomas rack up a string of hits with the Florida group, but he also co-penned "Smooth" from Santana's Grammy-winning 1999 comeback album, SUPERNATURAL. With SOMETHING TO BE, his solo debut, Thomas pulls out all the stylistic stops, revealing that Matchbox Twenty's alternative-rock format provided a somewhat limited forum for his considerable talents. "Lonely No More" mixes an insistent dance beat with an insanely catchy chorus that sounds straight out of the boy-band textbook. After George Orwell's widow refused Bowie the right to use 1984 as the title of his forthcoming album, he instead used the novel as a conceptual blueprint for what became DIAMOND DOGS. Accompanied only by keyboardist Mike Garson, bassist Herbie Flowers, and drummers Aynsley Dunbar and Tony Newman, Bowie played guitar, sax, Moog, and Mellotron, in addition to his contributions as vocalist, composer, arranger, and producer of the album. With the Orwellian themes as a loose backdrop, DIAMOND DOGS has much of the apocalyptic sense of future shock that informed ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. While the album doesn't have the musical punch or the songwriting strengths of ZIGGY, its gems make it more than worthwhile. The lush strings and dominant wah-wah guitar of "1984" seem like a nod to Isaac Hayes, while Bowie's howls and snarling sax on the title track make it instantly memorable. The glam rock classic "Rebel Rebel," with its edgy guitar riff and strutting 4/4 beat, is the disc's highlight, and one of Bowie's all-time great songs. Amidst the imagery of a gray, totalitarian future, Bowie injected some optimism by including the nostalgic "Rock 'N' Roll With Me," a good time, rootsy number that presaged his next transformation into the blue-eyed soul singer of YOUNG AMERICANS. This 20 track best of collection by Australian '60s rockers The Easybeats includes their hits "Friday On My Mind" and "Good Times." A better title for this 58-minute, 20-song CD might have been The Best of the Easybeats 1967-1969. Like virtually all of the compilations of this band's work (with the notable exception of Absolute Anthology), Repertoire Records' best-of ignores the group's 1965 and early-1966 Australian sides and their early hits in that country in favor of distilling down the group's work beginning with "Friday on My Mind." That might be the work that is best known to most listeners outside of Australia, but it also gives a skewed perspective of the group's work -- similar to if someone started a Beatles best-of with "Penny Lane." Neophytes might think from this that the Easybeats started out as a psychedelic rock outfit, when they actually made some punchy British Invasion-style music for a couple of years. In fairness, the sound here is excellent, and the choice of songs is good within the confines of the disc -- one just wishes that some of the more forced "good-time" music was supplemented with a few of those early rockers, perhaps in place of a couple of the later, serious songs.
