| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
You Are My Desire album
$8.85 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. Delivered with a crystalline falsetto, delicate strings and subtle pedal steel, it's a daring move worthy of Prince-ly accolades.
Elsewhere, Maxwell easily moves between sly funk (a percolating "Get To Know Ya") and sleek, between-the-sheets posturing (the Isley Brothers-flavored "Changed"). Other highlights include the goosebump-inducing ...

You Are My Desire album
$14.69 Now, these two do know how funny they are, right? Really, one must assume that they do, because the alternative assumption -- that the lederhosen, the affected German accents, and the tasteless flirtations with Nazi themes are actually meant as some kind of serious musical or cultural statement -- is simply too horrible to contemplate. Luckily, song titles like "S.S. Deathstar Supergalactik," "Mein Kommandant," and, most painful of all, "Third Reich from the Sun" make it pretty clear that they are dealing in a sort of high-camp make-believe here. (They're obviously only pretending to be German -- actual Germans would know how to pronounce the word "über.") Close your eyes and go along with the charade, though, and you'll find yourself caught up in the music, which is a genuinely well-thought-out ...

| | Luba Can't Stop CD (2009)
You Are My Desire CD music
$8.55 Luba, the shortened Russian name of Liubov, meaning 'love', was born in a small town amongst the Ural Mountains in South East Russia. Luba started to display an amazing talent and interest in music at such a young age her parents started her in vocal classes at the age of a mere four years old. Only a year later she began to sing on stage and perform in concerts for children. This was only the beginning of her adventure to take music to a serious level. At 14, Luba was accepted into Kurgan Music College, a very prestigious school which was quite an accomplishment to be admitted at such a young age. Throughout her four years of music college, Luba spent countless hours practicing and performing vocals, piano, and dance. Her education did not stop here and upon graduation she proceeded to further her studies at the Moscow State University of Culture and Arts where she continued her vocal lessons and majored as a 'Director of Show Programs'. Even while studying full time, Luba had achieved numerous accomplishments during her schooling, including winning Moscow's premier local Pop Music contest 'Art-Arena', performing at various high profile nightclubs, live concert performances, and winning numerous vocal competitions. In summer of 2008, Luba made a decision to venture to the U.S. for a cultural experience in hopes it would expand her musical horizon. It was at this place and time Luba met her future, and now Husband, Steve, a business entrepreneur who helped and encouraged her musical abilities. With the continuing assistance of her husband she has been able to overcome many of her initial language barriers and has successfully written and recorded several tracks, some of which are in collaboration with other American artists. Luba is not only ...
