| | Symphony X Odyssey CD (2002) Limited Edition
Odemarkens Son album
$15.35 Symphony X is certainly an anomaly: an '80s-style fantasy metal band who came along in 1994 (after Nirvana and Pearl Jam's success had seriously rearranged the rock landscape) and ended up acquiring a loyal Gen-X following (especially in Europe). In the '90s and 2000s -- a time when other young headbanger bands have embraced alternative metal and been influenced by punk, rap, and/or industrial -- Symphony X has maintained an unapologetically old-school outlook. And that old-school perspective remains on The Odyssey, which is a 2002 release but recalls the classic fantasy metal of '80s favorites like Queensr˙che, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ronnie James Dio, and Iron Maiden. A few of the riffs might bring to mind Metallica, a band that emerged in the '80s but has had a strong influence on alterna-metal combos of the '90s and 2000s. (Those who assert that Metallica eventually ended up becoming as influential as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest aren't off base). But even if some of guitarist Michael Romeo's heavier riffs have a somewhat Metallica-ish punch, everything else about this ambitious CD underscores Symphony X's love of '80s fantasy metal. From the conceptual lyrics to the ...

| | Codeseven Sense Of Coalition CD (1998)
Odemarkens Son songs
$13.99 Codeseven melds spastic hardcore with upbeat punk stylings and layers the music with incredibly beautiful singing that could melt even the coldest heart on their 1998 album, A Sense of Coalition. This six-piece hailing from North Carolina has seemingly collected all their favorite elements from their record collection and compacted them through a siphon, allowing only the genre's life fluid to leak through into their exquisite 11-track disc. From the heartbreaking melody of "Menthol Kings" to the excruciating screams which explode out of the speakers on the old-school thrash anthem "Daily Ethic," the listener will be hypnotized and viscously beaten by Codeseven's volatile concoction. At times vocalist Jeff Jenkins carries a light-as-a-feather croon similar to Deftones' Chino Moreno, yet Jenkins comes across as having a much more delicate voice. This is well documented on "Incommunicado," ...

| | The Big H: The Hellanbach Anthology CDs (2002)
Odemarkens Son CD music
$17.35 This is part of Castle Records "N.W.O.B.H.M. Classic" series.
Hellanbach has gone down in rock history as England's half-assed response to the glory of classic Van Halen, and this double-disc career anthology (collecting two full albums, one EP, and assorted extras) honestly does little to refute this rather unfortunate assertion. In its defense, however, Hellanbach was, like many New Wave of British Heavy Metal hopefuls signed to the Neat Records roster, poorly managed, severely under-produced, and generally left to fend for itself in terms of career guidance once the albums were shipped off the production line. With that in mind, one can better appreciate the Tyneside quartet's humble but enthusiastic forays into California-bred "raaawk and roooooollll" (to quote David Lee Roth); and, for his part, guitarist Dave Patton came as close as the next guy to nailing the famed Eddie van Halen "brown sound." Even if his efforts turned out somewhat orange by comparison, one can't ignore his impressive technical gifts, which lend sporadic winners like "All the Way," "Look at Me," "All Systems ...
| | Riot Privilege Of Power CD (1990)
Odemarkens Son music CDs
$10.39 Like Queensr˙che's 1988 prog metal masterpiece Operation: Mindcrime, Riot's Privilege of Power works off of fear, paranoia, and conspiracy, employing ten complex tracks that work as a single unit. Where Mindcrime stuck to a straight narrative, working every Pink Floyd-ism it could into its disillusioned protagonist, Power takes a broader, less specific approach to its subject. The atmospheric snippets that tuck-point each song into place help maintain a general air of unease, eventually giving way to an ambiguous but entertaining revolution that lacks Queensr˙che's self-importance. Lyrically, the group does little to deviate from obvious metaphor and "Viking" simplicity -- in "metalspeak" something as mundane as an airplane ride ("Metal Soldiers") is described by shouting "We climb aboard the eagle made of steel" followed by a four-octave scream -- but "true blue" fans of heavy metal know the genre's scholarly limitations, and revel in its face-value descriptions of rebellion and honor. The bizarre ...
